Objective

Learn about the country Croatia in preparation for


the United Nations Day at our school.

Basic Facts

Located in Europe.

In the European Union.

Zagreb is capital city.

Currency is the Kuna.

1 AED = 2 kuna.

Population is 4 million.

Calling code is +385.

History

Used to be a part of the Roman Empire.


Was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the
end of World War I.
Was a part of Yugoslavia from then until 1991 when
Croatia became an independent country.

Geography

Located in central Europe.

Has a continental climate.

Snow in the north part but not in the south.

Some areas have

lots of mountains.

Many islands.

Politics

Independence Day is October 8th.

Joined the EU in July 2013.

Parliament has the power to run the country.

President is Kolinda Grabar-Kitanovic.

Economy

Tourism is Croatia's most


well-known industry.
Over 20% of the
country's income comes
from tourists.
People from hundreds of
countries visit places like
Dubrovnik and Hvar.
Agriculture and industry
are also big.

Demographics

Most Croats are Christians (various sects), second


biggest religion is Islam.
The average Croatian family has 1-2 children.
99.2% of Croatian's can read, country has very good
(free) education and 8 universities.
Has universal health care.

Culture

Food is different in the North


and South part.
The South is by the sea, lots
of sea food. Similar to Italian
food due to history.
The North is by the forests,
game meat and bean stews
are popular. Similar to
German food due to history.
Soccer is our most popular
sport.
The dalmatian dog originated
in Dalmatia, Croatia.

Croatian Language

Has a Slavic base, so it sounds like Russian


Uses the same alphabet as the English language but has 6 extra
letters

Hello = Dobar dan!

Goodbye = Dovidenja!

How are you? = Kako ste?

Thank you = Hvala.

Yes = Da

No = Ne
