Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: (5 Minutes)

I will have The Family Life Cycle Scenarios worksheet on the students desks, and bell work instructions on the
board as they walk into the room. Bell work instructions: Good Morning! Get out your FACS notebooks, and your notes
from last week. Begin silently working on the worksheet at your desk. I will use this time to take roll and answer any
questions before class.
Learning activities/procedures:

Allotted time: (35 Minutes Total)

Activity/Review (10 Minutes)

(*As they begin finishing the bell work, pass out Family Structure slips.) Good morning everyone! I see most of
you are done, or are just finishing up your bell work. (*Number them off into groups of 2.) If youll look at your table,
youll see slips of paper with a Family Structure scenario on it. In just a minute, Ill give you and your partner a second to
read your scenario. Take a look around the room. Youll notice Ive put up the different kinds of family structures. Once
youve read your scenarios, you and your partner are going to figure out what kind of structure it is, and then go stand by
the sign that matches it. Once everyone is by the sign they think fits, well go over them as a group and see what weve
got! Any Questions? Ready? Go.
(*Go around the groups, and have each student read their scenario aloud. As a group we will
agree, or disagree as to whether or not they are in the correct place.)
Student Work: Collage (25 Minutes)
Alright, now were going to start working on making a family collage. (*Pass out the
rubrics) Each of you will get a piece of card stock paper from me. In the middle of the page you
will write Family Collage, and put a box around it. (*Hold up my example) Here is the example I
made at home. Then you will draw a line down the center of the paper - going up and down:
vertically. You will find pictures from the magazines weve got, and on the left hand side, youll
put together any type of family structure weve gone over in class. Be sure you write the correct
name of the family structure at the top. There is also a space on your rubric to fill in what youre
doing for both sides of your collage. In the middle of the page, on the left side of the line, you will
paste your pictures. Below the picture you will write a scenario telling us about the family
structure you created. On the right side of the page, you will find pictures to make an example of
a part of the family life cycle. Again, you can choose any part of the life cycle you want. It

doesnt have to match the family structure on the other side of the paper. At the top, you will
label the family life cycle stage, and below the picture you will write another scenario describing
the picture you made. Now, some of you will have an easier time finding pictures that work, and
since youre the first class youll probably have a better selection of pictures to choose from than
the other. However, some of you may have a hard time finding pictures to work for your specific
categories. Just do your best, and try to be creative! I was lucky enough to find two pictures that
worked perfect for my family types I chose since I didnt have twenty of you at my house fighting
me for pictures. But this is approximately how yours should look: Family Collage in the middle,
both titles at the top, and two scenarios at the bottom. Are there any questions? You will have
the rest of class today to work on these, so please make sure you take your time and make them
look nice. Be creative! Ok, Tables 1, and 3, you may go get a magazine. Tables 2 and 4, would
you distribute the glue and scissors? And tables 5 and 7, would you please get out the markers
and crayons?
Closure/Review of Content:

Allotted time: (5 Minutes)

Ok everyone, may I have your eyes up here please. Thank you. Would anyone like to share their collage?
(*Suggest someone who did a nuclear family, blended family, etc.) (*Get an example from at least 3 students - try to get
differing family structures.) Very good! Ok, now what about the family life cycle side of the page? (*Get examples from
several students - try to get different stages of the life cycle.) Awesome job you guys! I really like what Ive seen from you
all today, good work. Ok, lets take a few minutes and clean up. The trash and scraps need to make their way to the
recycling bin, or trashcan. If there are pieces of paper on the floor, please pick those up as well. Would table 6 please pick
up the glue and scissors, table 8 would you please put the markers and crayons away, and table 9, would you please make
sure all the magazines get put back up nice and neat. Thank you! Make sure your collages get put in the tray before you
leave, and when the bell rings you make be dismissed.
Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Allotted time: (N/A)

My evaluation of the students learning will be both formal and informal. I will use the bell ringer activity to
gauge the students recollection of information weve discussed in previous classes. I will also walk around to the
different tables to monitor and check for student understanding as they work on their collages. I will be able to tell if they
are matching the correct label to their pictures, as well as what kind of scenarios they are pairing. My formal assessment
will be the rubric each of the students will receive and turn in attached to their collage.
Modifications for exceptional learners:
Lower-achieving
I can read the Family structure slip to them aloud
I can reduce number of questions on the bell work sheet
I could have a scenario already in place for them
I could assist them in setting up the paper for their collage
Higher-achieving
I could have them make both sides of their collage coordinate (family structure matches stage of the family life
cycle)
