Service Learning Action Project

Your Service Learning Action Project (SLAP) is a requirement for successful

completion of this course. You will be designing a project that helps to solve
a problem that you have identified in our state, local or school community.
You will be expected to research that problem, develop a plan that seeks to
help the problem, and carry out your plan. After completion of this project,
you will present your results to our class in the form of a PowerPoint
presentation in which you describe the process you undertook in completing
this project. Thus, SLAP involves community service, but is not just
community service.

Selecting Group Partners

You may work with multiple group partners. These groups must be approved
by the instructor. If you choose to work with students from other classes,
you will be graded by the teacher of this course in the class in which you
present your project.
Identifying a Potential Topic
In your group, brainstorm potential ways that you can benefit our school,
local and state community through your service. After you have identified a
potential project, share your idea with the course teacher to see it is
approved. Your project topic must be school-appropriate and approved by
your teacher before beginning your research.
Research
You will conduct research about your potential topic and prepare a two-page
paper. This paper should include information about the problem that you
have identified.
Some guiding questions are:
What can you tell me about the problem? What is happening? Why?
What is the impact of this problem on our country, state, local
community and school?
How have people tried to respond this problem in the past? Have they
been successful in using these methods?

What can you (or your group) do to improve the situation?

Note: Each group member is responsible for conducting their own research
and creating this write-up. THIS WILL ALSO ACCOUNT FOR A SEPARATE
CLASS GRADE. Please see rubric (Next page)

Project Proposal
When you have finished your two-page research paper, you will construct a
project proposal. This proposal should include your plan for your project.
Your proposal should include:
Names of group members
Name of your project
Date of action
Whatspecifically--you intend to do for your project
How your project was influenced by your research
How you will gauge the success of your project
This proposal should be handed in and approved by the teacher before you
begin your work.
I will give you a due date and form for this.

Presentation
You must construct a presentation of your project that includes the following:

Your problem
A survey of research regarding issues related to your problem
(Research)
Your action project process and results (Implementation)
Answer the question: Was my project successful? Why? (Reflection)
Future ways in which students can build upon your action project
(Reflection)
What you learned about your school, community, state and/or country
by completing the action project experience (Reflection)
Photographs of you completing your action project

Note: The Service Learning Action Project (SLAP) counts as the Exam
Grade for the class.
Again, the SLAP is a requirement for completing this class.
