1. Use of Personal and Confidential
Personal Should be used where a communication is intended for the addresses only and is not
to be opened by a secretary or assistant.
Confidential should be used when the communication is to be opened by the addressee, his
secretary, or his deputy in his absence.
No other terms should be used.
2. The opening Salutation and complimentary close
All Formal letters should open with the salutation Dear Sir, Dear Sirs, or Dear Madam.
Where the addressee is personally known to the writer, it is correct to begin Dear Mr Dear
Mrs, Dear Miss, or the Christian name may be used.
The complimentary close must be adjusted accordingly, in the case of the formal opening, the
close should be Yours Faithfully and with the less formal opening, Yours sincerely is correct.
With the formal salutation and close it usual to add the name of the company and after the
signature the name of the writer and his position in the company, if necessary.

for should precede the typewriter name.
