Observation notes:
8:45-9:30
Students defining main idea, important details, and supporting details
Students take out their Think, Pair, Write sheets from the previous day
What information did you write?
Students take turns reading their information
**(Make sure when students are sharing they read aloud enough for all to live thank you for repeating some of their
information to ensure that all could hear)**
Teacher places selection under document imaging camera and reads it aloud as students follow along on their own
selection
Teacher points out the first paragraph the students would work on to identify important details or supporting details
Students took turns identifying and then both teacher and students highlighted or circled the important details in yellow
and underlined the supporting details
**(Could teams of two or three have done the work and then shared outmost of the students didnt have to do a lot of
thinking because volunteers drove the discussion)**
The class moved into the next paragraph and identified the sentences as important details or supporting details
Students supported their answers as they explained their thoughts for choosing either important or supporting details
For the final three paragraphs partners were challenged to work together to identify the main idea and three supporting
details; they also received a graphic organizer to record their answers
Classroom teacher modeled the sequence of the work read, identify, record on organizer
Partners began working and classroom teacher and student teacher moved around the classroom to assist as needed
Students were called to line up for a specialist class
STRENGTHS: kindness and patience with students; organized with materials ready; modeled for students prior to them
doing the work
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: build strategy toolbox for moving from whole group to small group; identify appropriate
pacing so students do not become disengaged
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Ms. Patel has been diligent in her time here at King's Grant. She has gotten to know the
students and she has participated with the grade level in collaboration! We enjoyed having her - LH
