Anticipatory Set: At the beginning of the lesson I plan to have the room decorated
up in a barn theme. If possible have a barn cardboard cutout to help the students
get in the mood of reading the book. When the students walk into the room I will
have barn animal noises playing from the computer. Students will each have a
book at their desk and there will be place mats sat out around the rocking chair in
the library area for the students to sit on while we read the book together.

Procedures: For my lesson I plan to start out reading the book together and we will
be playing a game with the book called popcorn. It is when the teacher starts out
reading the first paragraph or so and then stops and picks someone else to read
the next paragraph or till they are ready for someone else to read. The student
then picks another student to read next and that continues until we are done
reading for the day. Through the book when a main character is mentioned I will
be asking the students who is this character. After we have finished reading for
the day I will then again ask the students to pick a main character and describe
them to me, and describe what part they play in the book. That will happen every
day when we read. After we have finished the book completely the students will
get in a group of 3 and will be asked to pick one character from the story and to
draw what they think they should look like. Then the students will present their
pictures to the rest of the class and describe the character they have chosen and
what impact that character had on the plot of the story. They will then be asked
to tell me on their own what the main event was in the whole story.
Closure: After the students have read the book, they will be able to describe
characters, retell the main event, and give specific examples from the story to
support what they are saying. The students will be required to take a worksheet
home as homework to complete and bring back the next day. It will help prepare
them for the test that is the next day. Then the next day when they bring back
the worksheet they will be required to complete a informal assessment to test
what they have learned and if they have learned about describing characters,
retelling the main event, and give specific examples from the book to support
their answers.
