Chemical and Physical Properties- Inquiry Based Learning

Teacher: Toraman Yayla

Date: 04/16/2016

Subject area & grade level: Chemistry 8,9,10 Grade

Duration: 15 minutes
The student is expected to differentiate between physical and chemical changes and properties.
Objective(s):
Students will be able to:

describe physical and chemical properties of substances

collect data from different white powders based upon physical and chemical properties.

observe chemical and physical changes and record their findings.

analyze and interpret data .

identify substances based on collected data.

Engage:
Pass out three test tubes containing white powders around the class. The powders will be
Alka Seltzer, baking soda, and salt. The test tubes will be labeled as A, B, and C. Students will be
asked to describe physical properties of the powders and write them down in the Engagement
worksheet. Ask students to share what they wrote. Prepare three test tubes contain 5-ml of tap
water. Hold up a 5-mL test tube containing tap water and ask students to carefully describe the
waters physical properties. Prepare three test tubes containing 5-ml of vinegar. Hold up a 5-mL

test tube containing room temperature vinegar and ask students to carefully describe the waters
physical properties.
Pour half of each powder into the test tubes containing water. Ask students to observe the
changes. Wait a few minutes after mixing each powder so that students have enough time to
record their observations. Pour other half of each powder into the test tubes containing vinegar.
Ask the students to observe and record their observations. Also, ask students to describe each
observation as chemical or physical change.
Discuss their answers.. Review the chemical properties and physical properties of the substances.
Review the worksheets briefly checking for correctness during Exploring activity.

Explain:
Explain chemical reactions and physical changes that occurred. Direct various questions to the
students to emphasize on some distinctive observations. Also, For example, which powder does
fizz with water?, Which powder does not dissolve in water but does fizz in vinegar. In this
way, develop a recipe that will be used to identify unknown powders in the next activity.
The recipe that will be developed for the elaboration activity is as follows.
*If soluble and fizzes in water Alka-Seltzer
*If soluble but not fizzes in water Baking Soda or Sugar
Explain the signs of chemical reactions.
