COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

Comprehensive Classroom Technology Plan

Technology plays a vital role in todays education system. Each classroom subject has
technology standards that need to be met as well as the subjects own standards. The following is
a classroom technology plan for a physical education class. The mission and vision statement,
communication plan, integrating instructional technology, differentiating instruction through
technology and using technology to support assessment will all be addressed throughout this
plan.
Mission and Vision Statement
Ms. Dubois' students will learn how to be team players, live a healthy lifestyle and how
to become active teenagers and adults. Through exercise, team sports and nutrition lessons my
students will be excellent team players and healthy adults in the future. The students will achieve
these goals by tracking their exercise and diet throughout the school year, playing a variety of
team sports with a different team each week and by playing active video games such as Just
Dance and Wii Fit games.

Communications Plan
Technology can help tremendously in a classroom. It can help students learn material
indifferent ways and can also help teachers communicate with students and/or parents.
Technology such as email is truly a life saver when it comes to communication between teachers,
students and parents.
According to a 2012 U.S. News and World Report article, one of the best ways to
implement technology is to plan ahead (US News and World Reports, 2012). As a PE teacher, my
first plan was to not use much technology in my class, since my main goal as a Physical

COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

Education teacher is to help your children stay or get active at least once a day or once a week
even. When I planned ahead, I decided that I was only going to use interactive technology, such
Just Dance, Wii Fit, kahoot games, My Plate and the internet to get videos of our sports from.
The only other technology that I will use are email and my teacher website. I hope that my
intentions with technology are clearit is not that I do not like technology in the class, I simply
feel that using technology in my class goes against my degree and what I went to school for, as
well as the title and description of the class. This is why our class will still be active when using
technology!
Email gives the option for one to reply at a time best for them rather than on the other
persons time and can allow one to save any conversations had, for record. Email can be must
more efficient than phone calls or parent meetings and frankly, more parents feel more
comfortable with email rather than face to face interaction. As stated earlier, I plan on using
email as one of my main sources of communication between my students, their parents and
myself. We are all busy, and frankly email is what I prefer to communicate with due to the
simplicity of it. I am sure that most of my students will also email me with any questions or
concerns, since technology is really more their thing than mine!
My teacher website is also a great way to communicate with me indirectly. My website,
http://makfutureteacher.weebly.com/

is updated whenever we start a new unit or whenever we

have a big event coming up. I have made my website to be clear and concise. My website
consists of the home page, which include the current learning unit and a link for an outside
website containing information on our sportthis week we are starting floor hockey! This is
where I encourage students to go before the start of each week to prepare for my class and see if
any questions can be answered before emailing me. My website also contains an about me page,

COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

where my students and their parents can read more about me. The last page on my website it the
contact page where my phone number and email is listed. By having a clear, concise and crisp
website, students and parents can easily find and access most things about my class.
So, your children will mostly be learning how to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle in
my class, but interactive technology will be used to help them get active and understand that it
can be fun. I truly want to focus on the physical aspect of my class and have my students not use
technology such as cell phones for my one-hour class.
Parents, please feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns! Both my
email and phone number can be found on the contact page on my teacher website.

Integrating Instructional Technology

Technology plays a huge role in the typical classroom of todays society. In todays
classrooms, technology is used for reasons such as teaching the material, showing videos about
the material, games that help students better understand the material and so much more.
Technology has become so important in the classroom that teachers now have to take technology
classes, so that they understand how to work the technology and also how it will benefit them
and their students.
As a Physical Education teacher, I do see some flaws in the massive amount of
technology used in a regular classroom. However, I also see the good things that comes with
using technology in certain classes. The good parts of technology in the classroom are simple.
Technology is a creative way of challenging our students and almost tricking them into learning
(IDRA, 2001). I believe that in the core classes like math, science, language arts and even

history, technology is extremely beneficial. In these classes, students can learn so much more and
have more access to the material with technology. Science and math are the two classes, that I
personally think technology should really be used in. With math, calculators are often needed and
there are even websites that can help students better understand the material. With science, well,
there is already so much technology involved in science, you can honestly only add more!
Technology is great to help teachers facilitate some lessons! Some teachers have an entire
lesson that consists of using a learning website or doing research, etc. Technology also helps
facilitate instruction because it is how the students visually see the material. In society today,
there are Smart Boards, which are interactive white boards that are basically a computer. Even
projectors are still used to show the power points of the lessons. It can enhance instruction in the
same ways. Many students today have their own laptop or tablet at school, in which they use to
study, do research or sometimes even view the lesson. This helps when a student is absent or
even a student with a disability.
The possibilities of technology in the classroom are still growing, as they are essentially
endless. Students rely more and more on technology, so we as teachers, must learn about
technology and use it to our advantage.

Differentiating Instruction through Technology

Differentiated instruction offers students multiple ways to meeting their educational
needs (Smith & Throne, 2007). Each student has a different level of interest, knowledge and
ability meaning that we, as teachers need to ensure that each and every one of our students

succeed. This can be done through differentiated instruction. Some of the key components of
differentiated instruction are:
-

Differentiated instruction encourages modification of instruction by addressing

student diversity to help meet curricular objectives

Differentiated instructions puts an emphasis on student accountability for learning

and participation. This is done through grouping and activities like centers and web
quests

Differentiated instruction promotes a comfortable and challenging learning

environment.

Differentiated instruction is often used with special education students, also known as
exceptional learners. In my practicum experience, many special education students are given
print outs of power points so that is easier to follow along or have a lap top with them that can
access the power point. Some students receive a different power point that is easier to
understand. Technological differentiated instruction can be helpful because students are already
familiar with technology.
While technology can be extremely helpful with differentiated instruction, there are also
some cons. Some cons that technological differentiated instruction hold in my mind are as
follows:
-

Students can become too dependent on the technology and lose their own original
thoughts or educational independence

Technology allows for easy access to similar material which can cause cheating

The class might not be a class where technology is heavily used

Technology might be too confusing for some students

COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

A teacher should try to perform differentiated instruction with and without technology.
The cons that are listed above are some of the reasons that technology should not be the only use
to differentiate instruction.
My class will have differentiated instruction with technology and without it. For those
that need it, separate videos and power points of the learning unit will be created. I will also use
video games to help differentiate instruction. These video games will be active videos games;
such as Just Dance or the Wii Fit.

Technology to Support Assessment

Technology is a great tool to help facilitate the ongoing effort to assess student learning.
Technology can be used to review for assessments or even give assessments. A formative
assessment is typically what technology is used for in the classroom. A formative assessment is
to see where the students are at with the material, essentially it is to see if the teacher should
continue on with other lessons or stay on the current one to help the students better understand. A
great way to assess this is by playing review games or creating polls on Poll Everywhere.
Poll Everywhere is a great student centered technology tool. Poll Everywhere is student
oriented, due to the fact that it can be accessed on the computer, app or text message. The teacher
can access the poll, put it up on the projector and allow the students to see the answers come in
live. Poll Everywhere allows students to use technology in any class. By implementing
technology in some way, shape or form in every class will allow students to essentially take
responsibility for their learning (ISTE, 2016). Technology in the classroom also allows for
personalized learning for each student (ISTE, 2016). Students in todays society are more

COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

comfortable using technology, so using technology in class will make the students more
comfortable, no matter the class.
A summative assessment is done at the end of the unit. A summative assessment is
usually an examination that is grades with a rubric and sees how well the student grasped the
concepts. Final examinations are a great example of summative assessments. These examinations
are given on computers in todays society. This can sometimes back fire, especially when it comes
to cheating and sharing answers. Assessment technology does meet the ISTE requirements and
does tend to help the student better understand concepts and feel more in their comfort zone.
In my classroom, assessment technology will be used. I will use kahoot games as a
review of our sports. I will also use stop watches and video camera to record performance
assessments. My class will also be tracking our nutrition using an online website called
Choosemyplate.gov. Choose My Plate is a USDA resource that allows one to create a profile and
track their diet. On that same website, there is a portion called Super Tracker, which is where
students track their exercise. My students will do both trackers throughout the year. A final
written exam will be on paper.

Reflection Conclusion
In a physical education class, technology is not too common mostly because it goes
against the class. The point of physical education is to be active and educate students on how to
stay active and live a healthy lifestyle. However, with society changing at the current rate,
technology needs to be added into physical education. My technology plan includes technology
but in small amounts.

COMPREHENSIVE CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY PLAN

By using formative assessment games and polls, My Plate and active video games, my
students will be using technology to meet the standards but also learning to be healthy and
keeping true to my mission and vision statement. My teacher website is also a great tool used to
include technology in my class. By keeping it updated and checking it regularly, my students and
parents will be able to keep up with what is happening in class and be able to contact me at ay
time that is appropriate for them.
I believe that my technology plan will help increase productivity and efficiency in my
class. Technology seems to be what motivates students now- a -days, so by implementing it into
my class, my students will most likely preform better. Of course, I am aware that some students
despise physical education because they do not like sports, which is why I chose to implement
the technology I did. Just Dance and the Wii Fit can be rewards for my students, this way it is
something for them to look forward to. My plan will increase efficiency in my class, because my
students will understand how my class works and will know that if they ever have any questions
to check my website or email me.
