OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Students will:
1. explain the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on velocity
20B1.1k explain that a nonzero net force causes a change in velocity
20B1.2k apply Newtons first law of motion to explain, qualitatively, an objects state
of rest or uniform motion
20B1.3k apply Newtons second law of motion to explain, qualitatively, the
relationships among force, mass and acceleration
20B1.4k apply Newtons third law of motion to explain, qualitatively, the interaction
between two objects, recognizing that the two forces, equal in magnitude and
opposite in direction, do not act on the same object
20B1.5k explain, qualitatively and quantitatively, static and kinetic forces of friction
acting on an object
20B1.6k calculate the resultant force, or its constituents, acting on an object by
adding vector components graphically and algebraically
20B1.7k apply Newtons laws of motion to solve, algebraically, linear motion
problems in horizontal, vertical and inclined planes near the surface of Earth, ignoring
air resistance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
1. Recognize that forces can be modeled using vector diagrams
2. Utilize the nomenclature associated with forces
3. Articulate the causal relationship between object dynamics and force

Students will formatively assessed on their basic understanding of

Normal forces, Action and Reaction forces, parasitic forces, as well as
the associated orders of magnitudes through Kahoot! web based
software.
Students will be formatively assessed through participation in
classroom discussions.

Introduction
Time
Discuss the overarching question, discuss goals for the unit,
10
discuss real life relevance

Attention Grabber

Transition to Body

Perform a quick review of vectors through class participation

-vector diagrams
-direction and magnitude
-additive
-Units of force
-polar and compass methods of displaying
Discuss the difference between kinematics and dynamics
Body
Do a quick demonstration of two bodies pushing off of each
other (preferably two students on skateboards)
Kahoot formative assessment on the concepts.
Uncover the perceptions that the students have of the physics
involved in the simple demonstration to formatively guide a
teaching strategy (what concepts need more work, what
concepts need less attention?)
Work through 6 different examples of dynamic situations and
their associated force diagrams.
-Static object, no movement
-Static object, with movement
-Coasting car potential to bring up airbag discussion
-Canoe with collinear forces applied force addition
-Canoe with non-collinear forces applied. force cancellation
-Static suspended object
Students will be encouraged to participate in identifying action
and reaction forces, as well as calculating directions and
magnitudes. Students will be encouraged to develop hidden
curriculum components such as physics intuition as well as
sketching capabilities.
Practice problems will be assigned as group work. Pg 136:
