Lesson Sequence / Activities
Motivation:
I will read Treasure Map to students. I will introduce
vocabulary throughout the reading and write them on the
board as I go along: Compass rose, key, map, globe, time
capsule, north, south east, west, left, right, human and
natural features. I plan to use realia to help students
distinguish between a globe, a map, and a compass rose.
Then, I will show them examples of different treasure maps.
Being able to follow directions and give accurate directions
to others helps people get around. Say, for example, you
want to go on a play date with a friend. How will you tell
them to get to your house?
Presentation:
Prior to the lesson, I will hide an object for students in the
building. I will design a template that resembles the hallway
into which we will be exploring. Through modeling, I will guide
students to the treasure. Ok, it says start here. Step 1: walk
10 steps forward. Step 2: Turn to the left. Step 3: Take 18 giant
steps. Clue: The treasure will be west of you.
Practice and Application:
Students will get intro groups of three or four. I will call groups that
are sitting quietly to come up to me so I can reveal the object they will
have to hide. The object will be hidden inside a bag so other groups cant
see it. Then, together they must create a map that leads another group
to their object. Students must create a start point and an X that marks
the spot that signifies where the treasure is located. They also must
have a labeled compass rose and a key with three human features from
the classroom in it. Students must use specific directions, such as left
and right, as well as cardinal directions, to guide their partners around
the classroom. All students must WRITE one step and READ one step.
Review and Assessment:
Each student must fill out How to Create a Treasure Map
template.
- Oral assessment: each student must read one step when

they are searching for the object.

Written assessment: each student must write one step for
a group to follow.
Individual assessment: Each students must complete and
hand in an individual checklist
Group Assessment: Each group must hand in one
completed group checklist
Closure: Based in the clues and the directions you gave,
was it easy or hard to find the object? What helped? What
made it hard?
Exit ticket: Why do you think it is important to
write directions correctly? Students must write at
least one sentence.

Extension: Do you think you could draw a map of how to get

from your house to school? If they dont think so, I might have
students make a map of something they like: their room, the
cafeteria, the playground, etc. and be sure they label it and
complete all the requirements from the checklist.
Below, I included the template titled Our Classroom that I would
pass out to each group. I also attached the map that I used to model
how to follow directions. Prior to the lesson, I will hide an object for
students in the building. I will give them this template that
resembles the hallway into which we will be exploring. Through
modeling, I will guide students to the treasure. Ok, it says start
here.
Step 1: Take 10 steps forward.
Step 2: Turn left.
Step 3: Take 6 giant steps.
Step 4: Stop. Clue: The treasure will be west of you.
