Behavior Contingency Plan (BCP)

Catchy, positive title Talk, talk, talk it out!
Undesirable Behavior Targeted: Tattling
1. Being overly concerned with others actions and behaviors, distracts student from own work.
2. Telling the teacher about another students actions that are not causing harm or danger.
3. Too focused on others to do their own work.
4. Trying to tell others what to do in a negative way.
5. Trying to get a peer in trouble with the teacher.
6. Poor friendships develop which causes poor collaboration in group work.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted:
Goal: For students to be able to clearly and nicely communicate problems or observations with peers.
Steps:
1. Think about the issue.
2. If the issue does not involve you, keep working/listening/doing the activity.
3. If an issue does arise between two students, they will use learned phrases to express how they feel
without teacher involvement.
Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced when & how?
1. Immediate R+ Phone cutouts as markers (tokens). Student can earn two a day, one at the half-mark and
another by the end of the day for not tattling to the teacher and instead, being an effective
communicator.
2. Ongoing R+ When 90% of the class earns their 2 phone cutouts each day, the teacher will add a letter to
our front board. The word will spell Communicators.
3. Overall R+ - Communication Day!
4. Immediate: Student can earn two phones a day; one at the half-mark and another by the end of the day
for not tattling to the teacher and instead, being an effective communicator. Half-mark is added as
they line up for lunch. End of day is done, as we are getting ready for dismissal.
Ongoing: At the end of the day, we count up and if we meet our goal, we earn a letter that the teacher
will add to the front board.
Interactive Learning Activity
Explain to students that they will have the opportunity to put their new developed communication skills to
work!
Students will have the opportunity to engage and participate in multiple forms of communication such as
video calling another class across the country via Skype Classroom (learn about their area, how life
differs) (social studies, 1.16A describe how technology changes the ways families live, 1.8A identify
examples of goods and services in the home, school, and community, 1.6C identify and describe how
the human characteristics of place such as shelter, clothing, food, and activities are based upon
geographic location)
writing letters to another class (ELA 1.19B write short letters that put ideas in a chronological or
logical sequence and use appropriate conventions (e.g., date, salutation, closing)
phone presentation-guest speaker comes to display and discuss the different types of phones and how
technology has changed over time (Social Studies:1.16B describe how technology changes
communication, transportation, and recreation)
Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors:

Read Dont Squeal, Unless Its a Big Deal. Explore the difference between tattling and reporting. Then
focus how children can solve their own conflicts.
Model, model, model! The teacher will model how to communicate with peers in various situations.
The teacher will also post sentence stems that can be referred to during students conversations and
discussions. Students will practice using these sentence stems in their conversations. Teacher will remind
students how we communicate during group collaborations and group discussions. As time goes on,
Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan:
Explain to students that it is their job to become effective communicators. If a friend does something to
both you, but you do not express your feelings to your friends, how will they ever know? Explain that
we are on a good communication watch. That means, if you can choose to talk to your peers about your
conflicts instead of looking for the teacher to resolve your issue, you can earn a telephone. Your personal
goal is to earn 2 phones a day. If as a class, 90% of us earn two phones, then we can all earn a letter to
spell a special word. If we spell the special word, we earn a special day!
