ESS2.

A Earth Materials and Systems

http://www.education.com/science-fair/article/erosion/
Step One:
TOPIC
The movement of water is one of the primary causes of erosion. Water alone will cause some erosion,
but not at the rate of water movement. Erosion is part of the standard (ESS2.A) earth material and
systems therefore this topic involving erosion is part of the science based lesson plan for grades
2nd-3rd.
Step Two:
GOALS
To be able to answer these questions based on the project.
What causes erosion?
What causes more erosion water and movement or water alone?
Step Three:
MATERIALS
3 clear plastic cups
3 pieces of small candy-coated chocolates
Water
Step Four:
STRATEGIES
The movement of water is one of the primary causes of erosion. Water alone will cause some erosion,
but not at the rate of water movement.
Terms
erosion: the wearing away of rocks

Concepts
Water movement causes erosion.
Research Questions:
What causes erosion?
What causes more erosion water and movement or water alone?
Step Five:
PROCEDURES
Introduction
a) Talk about weathering;
Weathering
is the wearing away of the surface of rock, soil, and
minerals into smaller pieces.
Example of weathering
: Wind and water cause small pieces of
rock to break off at the side of a mountain.
Weathering
can occur due to chemical and
mechanical processes.
b) Talk about erosion;
Erosion

is the wearing away of an object or substance through an

external force. Typically,
erosion
refers to the gradual wearing away of soil, dirt, rock, or
other land structures over time through natural forces such as water or wind.
c) Talk about deposition;
Deposition
, also known as desublimation, is a thermodynamic
process, a phase transition in which gas transforms into solid. The reverse of
deposition
is
sublimation. One
example of deposition
is the process by which, in sub-freezing air, water
vapor changes directly to ice without first becoming a liquid.

Students will get introduced to the topic.

Students will then be demonstrated the lab by the teacher in the front of the class.
Students will then get sheet of paper with pictures of steps.
Start Lab (with teacher as demonstrator)
Help also provided while observing
End Lab (with conclusion from teacher)
Conclusion

Beyond
1. Ask students what they learned
2. What did the students observe happening to the m&ms?
3. How does this then also involve
a. Weathering
b. Erosion

c. Deposition

SOME IDEAS I CAN TRY TO INCORPORATE:

For students in group 1
Everything can be visual and all about speech
Have star stickers to keep their focus on the lesson plan
Describe what they see happening to the m&ms
Can be rewarded at the end by getting to eat some m&ms
Have many visual pictures as well to describe the different types of earth materials
and systems.

For student in group 2

I can try including words with the r sounds and ask her to repeat them after myself
After lesson ask her for a summary of what she learned saying it outloud therefore
counting the r sounds she uses in her speech.
Can make a bingo game using r sounds but also involving the lesson plan topics.
