Lesson Title: Vocabulary

Time: 30 minutes
Subject/ Grade: Language Arts/2nd grade
Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.4Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a

text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.


Objective: I will be able to determine the meaning of words that appear in the text
about an atlas by reviewing and learning the definition of words in the text.
Language Objective: I will be able to communicate with my class mates using the
vocabulary words I have learned by discussing how to make sentences with the
vocabulary words.
Materials: white boards, PowerPoint,
Instructional Set:
Anticipatory Set- 2 minutes
Power Point w/ student interactive- 20 minutes
Students will write sentences with their vocabulary words on their white boards- 7
minutes
Closure- 1 minute
Anticipatory Set
Tell students a story
about how you got lost on
a road trip. Ask them if
they are have gotten
lost? Mention that being
able to read an atlas
and/or maps can help you
from getting lost.

Teacher Action
Tell students they have
10 seconds to sit on the
carpet with their white
boards. Give students
who come down quietly
and quickly 10 dollars.
Charge students who are
not seated by 10.
Count down from 5 as
soon as every student is
seated to make sure
students are paying
attention.
Tell students a story
Ask students to raise
their hands if they have
ever been lost.

Introduce the PowerPoint


and text to students.
Throughout the
PowePoint ask students
questions and use
popsicle sticks to call on
students. Charge
students who are calling
out, reward students who
are listening.
When the class is finished
with the power point, tell
the students that they are
going to be writing
sentences using their new
vocabulary words in pairs.
Have students write 3 to
5 sentences on their
white boards.
Warn students when they
have two minutes left.
After 6 minutes clap your
hands to regain students
attention. Call on
students to share their
sentences.

Closure
Have students think- pair- share how their new vocabulary words relate to an
atlas. Call on two students to share. Review objective- thumbs up or down.

Assessment
Assess students on their ability to make sentences using their vocabulary
words accurately. Make sure the students are using the vocabulary words in ways
that make sense. Next week students will be taking an atlas quiz, part of which will
contain a section on vocabulary.

Differentiation Instruction
If writing sentences is challenging for students allow them to write 1 or 2
sentences and orally construct 2 more sentences with their partner. If students need
more of a challenge tell them their sentences have to have at least 10 words in
them, creating more detailed sentences.
