geiyor. Sektrdeki oyuncularn miktar yerine rn niteliklerini artran yatrmlara ynelmesi, Trk seramiini, ucuz rn algsndan
bir kademe ste tayacaktr. Bu noktada, Turquality desteklerinin
reticiler iin byk bir yardm, Eximbank kredilerinin ise nemli bir

We left behind year 2013. Examining the development of the ceramic industry in international markets in this period, we can say that quantitative growth will continue and that there will be an increase in unit prices,
moving towards higher value added values. The positive progress in the
domestic market will not decrease exports in the upcoming period, with
present excess capacity being activated easily. Hence, our manufacturers
will move towards products that are higher technologically and aesthetically, which will be a quite positive development.
The excessive contraction experienced by Italy, Portugal and Spain in domestic markets in the economic recession in Europe was cause for over-supply from these countries to Central/Northern Europe and Britain, which are also our markets. This prevented our manufacturers making moves. Chinese ware
with increasingly better quality are prevented by anti-dumping laws; yet one must not forget that these products are
penetrating European markets. Far Eastern markets do not appear to be opportunities for our industry due to very
powerful local manufacturers, customs barriers and logistical reasons. However, North America, specifically USA,
stand out as an area of opportunity for tiles. Our association and Central Anatolia Exporters Union (OAIB) are engaged
in studies in connection with Africa.
The advancement of the brand perception of Turkish ceramic depends on producing ware at least catering to the
middle segment and investing in the permanent markets. If the players in the industry opt for investments increasing
product quality instead of quantity, Turkish ceramic will be taken to one higher level than the perception of cheap
product. At this point, we should not forget that Turquality support is a great help for manufacturers, with Eximbank
loans serving as an important element of support.
I wish that 2014 brings new and positive approaches to the lives of all individuals and companies!...

Turkish Ceramic Industry Strategy covering 2012-2016 under the vision of Raising the Image and Increasing the Global Market of Turkish Ceramic Industry has the general objective of Ensuring Healthy
Growth in Local and International Markets and to Increase the Competitiveness of Turkish Ceramic Industry. The second meeting of the
guiding committee, which is part of the application, monitoring and
evaluation process of the document was held chaired by Department
Head Mr. H. Ali Ozan at Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology
on 29/08/2013.
The meeting was attended by Turkish Ceramic Federation Chairman of
the Board Ahmet YAMANER, Federation Secretary General Germiyan
SAATIOLU, Ceramic Research Center (SAM) R&D Coordinator Prof.
Dr. Alpagut KARA, Gazi University Member of Faculty Prof. Dr. Sleyman
TEKELI and authorized representatives of agencies which are listed as
responsible organizations in the Action Plan. A presentation was made
at the conference by Branch Manager Ziynet Berna ORHAN, containing
assessments regarding the most recent
six-month period.
The gains of the ceramic industry with
the application of the document are listed as follows:
Preparatory work for Turkish
Ceramic Industry Raw Material strategy
plan was started.
Ceramic Industry and Machine
Industry were brought together searching possibilities of collaboration.
Eskiehir - Bilecik Ktahya
Ceramic Business Cluster Project was
started.
Eleven project incentive certificates were issued for ceramic industry investments in January-June 2013
period.
Two firms engaged in the ceramic sector were issued R&D Center
certificates.
Thirty-eight projects with a
total budget of 6 million TL were given
support oriented to the ceramic industry.
Eight projects were given support under the Techno-entrepreneur
Capital Support under the initiative of
Turkish Ceramic Industry.
Sector was made part of preparatory work for construction and installation unit rates book.
Decision was made to start the SUVER (Water Efficiency) Project in
connection with less water consuming ceramic ware.
Decision was made to search opportunities to be created for the
ceramic industry by urban transformation project.
TCDD has started to design studies on laying of connection railways to ceramic plants.
merli - Gebze Dilucu Railway Project is being studied by TCDD.
Export credits of 112.4 million USD were made available to the ceramic industry in January 1 May 31, 2013 period.
Support for energy efficiency increasing projects for 4 firms engaged
in the ceramic industry were placed under review and assessment.
Application, Monitoring and Evaluation Draft Report was discussed at the
conference after the presentation where developments regarding actions
were assessed. The developments in the report were conveyed by assistant
expert Tuba ALBAYRAK and representatives of responsible organizations.
Views of participating agencies and organizations on actions were taken.

Ceramic Research Center was founded in 1998 under the TBITAK University-Industry Joint Research Centers Program (SAMP) for the purpose of
offering services required by ceramic industry which can be provided through university collaboration, setting up the research conducted in universities in direction with industrial and technological advances and on topics
required by the industry to ensure knowledge to be stored on such topics;
to develop experienced graduates in the field of industrial research, to increase research potentials of universities by Masters and Ph.D. studies students and to ensure continuity in university-industry collaboration. SAM
A.., which gained a university-industry partnered structure by incorporating under equal partnership of 19 shareholders engaged in the ceramic
industry and Anadolu University in 2007, has an industry weighted management concept in line with its objects of foundation. Six of the sevenmember board of directors come from the industry and one from Anadolu
University. Presently, more than 85 percent of manufacturers in Turkey
(approximately 55 firms) are collaborating. SAM, pursuing these activities
in Eskiehir Technology Development Zone also uses the infrastructure
of Material Sciences and Engineering Department under a protocol signed
with Anadolu University. In this increasing competitive environment, SAM
satisfies the research, technology, development and innovation demand of
the industry. Through joint benefit projects realized so far, its significant
value added was provided to the ceramic industry. In addition, important
contribution was provided to the industry with services like technologic
support which cannot be directly calculated and prevention or elimination
of production losses through consulting services.
Conducting research in the field of ceramic; SAM caters to ceramic tile,
sanitary ware, refractories, tableware, ceramic colorant and raw material
manufacturers.

holds every year, this year at Moda Deniz Club Friday, December 06, 2013,
bringing together industry individuals, allowing them to have a delightful
evening. The event was held with the participation of esteemed industrialists and senior level executives of the industry.
In the event, Turkish Ceramics Federation Chairman of the Board Ahmet
Yamaner gave a speech after the cocktail party and dinner. Doing a recap of
the previous year, Yamaner presented Ceramic Honor Awards to Mr. Mehmet ahinkaya, anakclar Seramik firm Member of the Board Honorary
Chairman and Toprak Seramik Chairman of the Board Halis Toprak, two
doyennes of the industry.

Art Discipline Head. Terwiel has given numerous conferences domestically and internationally on the topics of ceramic history and art education alongside of various
solo exhibitions. Beside her work as art instructor and in museums, she is a member of
Plastic Arts Association and Art Instructors Association.

Ceramic education in Turkey does not just involve an area limited to universities. Special studios (like Bingl Baarr, Mehmet Tzm Kzlcan),
regions of traditional production (like Knk, Avanos), ceramic vocational
higher schools, ceramic departments of vocational schools, ceramic
courses offered by municipalities, ceramic courses of private or public
art galleries, ceramic courses offered to children in kindergartens, educational training in ceramic factories are samples of ceramic education
for almost all segments of population and age where ceramic education
is pursued according to their own objects and rules. Whats different in
the ceramic education in universities is that the persons receiving such
education may specialize as a fine artist or ceramic instructor each.
Should we compare the ceramic education offered in our universities
to whats offered in the world, it can be said that the level is pretty
good. The most basic criteria is the increase in the number of foreign
students trying to get education in our country in recent years and the
quality and number of artists wishing to participate in our events from
abroad. Our country now is in a position known for events in the ceramic
field. Also, the positive interaction between the ceramic departments
in different cities encourage us to organize more permanent and new
projects. Inter-cultural communication, sharing of art knowledge and
our ceramic events which are quite useful in education of our students
are not just limited to Hacettepe University, being enriched with local
visitors contributing to the increase in the number of individuals to select art. Our art museum, as a result of the events we hold, is embracing
a rich collection with the works of significant fine artists all over the
world, which works are used for educational purposes as well. Also,
the increase in the number of publications like articles, catalogs and
journals create a significant difference in the education of our students.
Today, for a student who just starts studying ceramic, neither material,
nor technology, nor seeing other countries is a problem. In addition to
having all these means, they have an educational system where they
can set up links with other art disciplines as they wish. International
contracted programs, diversity in courses afford them all options. The
opportunities of learning by experiencing and subsequently interacting
with those artists are afforded through one-on-one shows, applications
and presentations by domestic and international guest artists, each
event is then archived, serving as a source for future students. I find
the students of our department in terms of interaction with fine artists.
They are getting the chance to work with a large number of artists not
only in events organized in Hacettepe but also those in other countries
(like Korea, Northern Cyprus and France) in our country as a result of
active participation.

Piri Reis is a great name for the world too in the field of seamanship and
map making, as much as he is for the Ottoman State. Therefore, 2013,
which is the 500th anniversary of Piri Reiss drawing his world map, was
recognized as Piri Reis Memorial Year by UNESCO.
In line with its identity and vision, Kale Group decided to combine the Pir
of the Seas with Kale of Ceramic and hence, the first exhibition, bringing together 90 large sized maps which qualify as art works by Piri Reis,
and close to 30 ceramic works interpreted by Turkish ceramic fine artists
smail Btn, Burak ifti, Ayegl ahin and Mustafa Tunalp, was held
in anakkale at imenlik Fort. Kale Group wanted to introduce this exhibition to the whole world in line with Piri Reiss name, and preparations
were started for the second exhibition in Rome which would be the second
leg of the project. Mustafa Tunalp, Serap Erdoan, smail Yardmc, Sevim
izer, Ayegl ahin, Engin etin and Fuat Kkek from Turkey; Ivo Sassi
from Italy, Kostas Karakitsos from Greece, Ossama Emam from Egypt and
Elisabeth Le Retif from France, Xavier Monsalvatje from Spain and Charles
Wissinger from USA created more than 100 original ceramic works worldwide as a result of a workshop which took 15 days. Eventually, the second
exhibition comprising more than 50 works selected out of these brought
together the two Mediterraneans from the same land, anakkale; the Pir
of the Seas and Kale of Ceramics, this time in Italys capital, Rome.

celebrated its 30th anniversary in the Fall Semester of 2013 with various
events held on this occasion October 24-25, 2013. Panels were held for two
days with the participation of the dean, instructors and students of 30 years
ago chaired by Dean Prof. Dr. Meltem Ylmaz and an exhibition was opened
which could be visited until November 8. Permanency was achieved through a

Dokuz Eyll University Faculty of Fine Arts Ceramic and Glass Design Department Research Assistant Gler Ouz participated in the Workshop
for Animal Statues Made of Paper Clay held by British Fine Artist Susan
Halls at the International Ceramic Studio in the city of Kecskemet in Hungary from August 1 to August 7, 2013.
The International Ceramic Studio (ICS) known for its philosophy of change
and communication with its 30-year past lies in the city of Kecskemet
8 km. south of Budapest, one of the leading ceramic art centers in the
world and the capital of Hungary. The center has so far hosted more than
500 fine artists from more than 40 cities
and is home for an impressive collection
of more than 3000 contemporary ceramic
works. This institution today is maintaining
its contribution to the contemporary art of
ceramic with its ceramic tradition rooted in
its history.
Through the event, participants took part
in all aspects of the artistic philosophy and
practice. The cultural and artistic collaboration derived, thanks to the interaction of
Hungarian and other international artists,
allowed successful and creative works to
emerge. The workshop was enriched by the
presentations of artists.
In the workshop conducted by British ceramic fine artist Susan Halls, first a presentation was given by the
artist. Then, it was demonstrated in the workshop to
participants how large or
small animal figures could
be built from clay using rapid
and effective techniques. In
this context, where sheet
and coil techniques were exploited, figures were created
rapidly and with no effort
without hollowing or filling.
Discussions were made on
animal anatomy which was
the basis of the workshop.
The objective was not to
create realistic copies but to
make interpretations capturing the nature and spirit of
animals. Each participant of
the workshop built his or her
own animal figure. For ease
of working, the animal figures that were hand shaped using paper porcelain clay were firstly initial
fired and then raku fired.
Through the working period in the International Ceramic Studio, artists from various locations of the world acquired different perspectives,
thanks to the synergy they created.

European Ceramic Society ECERS held its 13th Ceramic Congress with
large attendants at Ester Convention Center in the city of Limoges for June
23-27, 2013.
It was observed that the preparation efforts for the congress was continued for approximately one year in the form of different sections on eleven
different themes and these sections were attended by scientists from our
country who do research and applications relating to ceramic with their
papers.
9 Eyll University Faculty of Fine Arts Ceramic and Glass Design Department Head Prof. Sevim izer was appointed as Section Head for Archaeomaterials Ceramic as Cultural Heritage Section in June last year.
Prof. izer, who took on this task at the invitation of Phillip Colomban from
Marie Curie University in Paris, France, conducted a theme work for a year
in connection with the selection, evaluation and scheduling of the papers.
Sevim izer, who also gave an opening speech as session head at Archaeomaterials Section held in Muse Debouch during the congress, gave two
presentations; one oral and one as a video poster. The first one was entitled Reduced Pigment Lustre; Old Texts, New Experiments; the other
one, The Reflections of Cultural Heritage on Turkish Contemporary Clay
Art. In this presentation repeated as a continuous video show through
sessions, included the videos of the works of ceramic fine artists who
worked on the theme of the substantive culture and traditions of Anatolia
carried from the past to today.
On the other hand, the tests and applications that were the deliverables
of the Research and Bringing to Present of Old Luster Techniques which
was supported by Dokuz Eyll University under scientific research projects
were part of this presentation.
In the sessions which featured papers by researchers from France, Spain,
Korea, Italy and England using advanced laboratory tools predominantly
on the topic of examination of body, glaze and decoration materials of
archaeologic ceramics, Sevim izers presentation on experimental work
and applications and the presentation by Aye etin, an instructor in the
same faculty, where she presented the restoration done by herself titled
Diyarbakr, The tiles of Diyarbakir St. Hosef Armenian Catholic Church:
works of conservation, restoration, project and practicing drew great interest and accolades as different themes.

Iznik is close to the palace and there are quartz deposits nearby.
Transportation is easy. Ktahya is farther from the palace. Therefore, ini developed in Iznik with the support of the palace. The
patterns drawn by masters were taken to the palace easily and
therefore, Iznik china has reached a summit. The literature says that
Iznik is a palace art, Ktahya is a folk art. Palace art has disappeared
when the palace collapsed but the art of the people has survived.

In 1975, when I started this art, Iznik ini was history. Very traditional works were produced in Ktahya. The compositions were
detached from their essence. The colors were far from their originals. The production was totally in pastel colors but the works I
saw in Istanbul in Topkap Palace, Rstem Paa, in Turkish Islamic
Works Museum, in inili Kk were magnificent and unbelievably
beautiful. I said why shouldnt this art come back? This was my
starting point. I was an ordinary art teacher; actually I hadnt gone
to college. I was a village teacher those years. Our teachers had

art form. When we ask what is ini, typically we get the answer
that it is a type of ceramic. But for me, ini is a music of the eye, and
notes of this music are tulips, carnations, hyacinths and roses. No
musician can compose using two notes but we can make beautiful
compositions using just the blue and the white. When I examined
the inis, I saw their original colors; the coral, the turquoise and the
emerald. These were jewels; would you look at the horizon, the
concept of our ancestors? I mean, they have concealed the color of
precious stones under the glaze. They wanted to live in spaces containing the colors of jewels. Why, because these precious stones
charge the human being with positive energy, giving him peace.
Id like to tell you an anecdote relating to Suleiman the
Magnificent:
The sultan does not hesitate to receive two tradesmen; one is his
tailor, the other is the tradesmen from Iznik. When researched,
we see that the tailor is for his own ornaments, the ini is for
the ornaments of the palace. Tradesmen come before him with
the excitement of presenting him works. They say We did it for
you my sultan. The sultan awards them saying give him two
purses of gold, three purses of gold. The tradesmen goes back
to his workshop with the excitement of creating better works,
happy and in peace, well fed and safe. The art of ini is the art of
700-year-long Empire. No country in the world has such an art;
ini is our own art; it is the art of Turks, the enormous empire. The
artists of palace have discussed, have so detailed the beauties
created by God that they have seen beauties as they went into
detail. They have sent it first onto paper, then earth, then to the
kiln and eventually these beauties have emerged.

Seramik retiminin Hititlere kadar uzand Avanosta gerek seramiki saysnn azalmas, gerekse retim
maliyetlerinin ykseklii ve rnlerin daha ucuz fiyatlarla pazarlanmas nedeniyle seramik retim ve tketiminde
byk oranda gerilemeler yaanmtr. Bu da daha pahal grlen seramik sr ve boyalar yerine seramik yapyla
uyumsuz ve kaliteyi drc malzemelerin kullanmnn yaygnlamasna neden olmutur. Yrenin geleneksel
kili olan yksek demir oranna sahip krmz kilin yapsna uygun, dk dereceli sr eitlerinin ve yeni sr
reetelerinin oluturulmas, krmz kil bnye zerinde yrede retilen rnlere uygun, hammadde asndan ucuz
sr eitliliinin artrlmas, kalc ve kaliteli rnlerin kullanmn salamak iin bu aratrma hazrlanmtr.
Bu dorultuda sr reeteleri hazrlanm, eitli seramik boyalar ile birlikte bu reetelerden elde edilen srlarn
denemeleri yaplm ve renk eitlilii, estetik grnm ve seramik bnyeye uygunluk asndan baarl sonular
elde edilmitir. Yaplan aratrmalarda elde edilen sonularn yerel retimde eitlilii ve kaliteyi artrarak, Avanos
seramik retiminin kalcl ve devam iin nemli bir rol oynayabilecei gzlenmitir.

ABSTRACT
In Avanos where ceramic pottery making dates back to Hittites, large scale reductions have taken place in
the production and consumption of ceramic due to the decrease in the number of ceramicists and also high
production cost and marketing of products at lesser prices. This has caused popularity of use of materials that are
inconsistent with ceramic structure, bringing down quality in place of ceramic glazes and colorants deemed to be
more expensive. This study was prepared for formation of low temperature glaze types and new glaze recipes in
line with the composition of red clay with high iron content which is the traditional clay of the region, increasing
the diversity of glazes with inexpensive raw materials fit for products produced in the region on red clay bodies. To
that end, glaze recipes were prepared; tests were made on glazes derived from such recipes with various ceramic
colorants and successful results were achieved in terms of color diversity, aesthetic look and fitness to ceramic body.
It was observed that the results derived in carried out studies could play an important role for the sustainability
and continuation of Avanos ceramic production, increasing the diversity and quality in local production.

Pottery making dating back to Hittites has survived passed from father to
son in Avanos. The decrease in demand for traditional Avanos pottery, difficulty in working conditions and use of non-ceramic materials like technical pen and varnish have corrupted this art discipline. This study has sought
ensuring use of appropriate ceramic glazes and colorants being popular in
the regions pottery where design and coloring is done using oil paint, ink and
technical pen. It is believed that glaze and underglaze coloring applications
derived as a result of done research may serve as models in regions pottery
or pave the way for new research from now on.
AVANOS MLEKL
Pottery making which is the craft of building pots and bowls from earth and
adopting this as a trade is one of the oldest trades. Transformation of ceramic and pottery making into a trade has taken place when settled life was
fully adopted and settlements were set up. People have produced pots in
line with their needs including ceramic intensely in set up trade relations. In
time, artistic developments have also occurred in pottery making, finding the
opportunity of developing economically as well.
The initial products of pottery making, the process of development of which
is still ongoing, may be said to have produced in Mesopotamia and Anatolia.

alan Avanos insan, mlek yapmak iin kulland malzeme olan amuru
Kzlrmak evresinden karr.
Avanos yresinde Formlar ve boyutlar ihtiyaca ve amur trne gre ekillenir. Geleneksel retim; boylar 20 cmden 1,5 mye kadar deien; mlek, kp,
testi ve gvelerden oluan ilevsel gereler retimidir. Son yllarda Hitit ve
Frig seramikleri bata olmak zere, Anadolunun en eski formlarn tekrarlayan
retim hediyelik eya retimi balamtr.3 Blgede; zlk, el testisi, su mlei, gebece ve yadan gibi adlar alan kap trleri retilmektedir. Son dnemlerde elektrik maliyetinin yksek olmasna karn gelimi atlyelerde elektrikli

The first artifacts of ceramic dating back to the Neolithic age being found in
Anatolian land bring a unique value to the traditional dimension of ceramic.I
Pottery making in the district of Avanos of Nevehir Province in the Central
Kzlrmak part of Central Anatolia dates back to 1700 B.C. to Hittite Age.
As a result of Toprakl Tumulus excavations, it was learned that Avanos has
been a continuous settlement since the first Bronze Age. Hittite, Phrygian,
Iskit, Lydia, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Seljuki Ottoman civilizations have
left their traces on these lands2 The traditional ceramic hub in the Cappadocia Region which is a very important touristic area is one of Anatolias centers
with significance as regards pottery making. It is believed that pot and bowl
production has started with the foundation of Avanos. The ceramic tradition
of Avanos, going back to Hittites, has started to develop with its foundation
reaching its present state. Avanos people, trying to make this traditional craft
live extract the clay used for pottery making from around Kzlrmak.
In Avanos region, Forms and dimensions are shaped according to need and
type of clay. The traditional production is of utilitarian ware, namely pots,
urns, pitchers and casserole pots ranging in size from 20 cm to 1.5 m. In recent years, giftware production has started reiterating the oldest forms of
Anatolia, lead by Hittite and Phrygian ceramic ware.3 Types of containers given names like zlk, el testisi, su mlei, gebece and yadan are produced in
the region. Despite high cost of electricity in recent times, use of electric kilns
has become widespread in advanced workshops.
Present Avanos pottery making is rather oriented to touristic purposes. The
traditional containers produced are important touristically, giving rise to the
concept of ceramic giftware. This concept may decrease the quality of pots
due to materials used other than glazes with no relationship to ceramic, creating applications in contrast with the logic of ceramic and the traditional
pottery style of the region. The people of the region attempting to keep tourism alive are developing their wares with new designs to enhance this diversity, continuing to produce glazed, unglazed, finished and decorative ware,
catering to different needs to be sold to different cities of the country.
Avanos yresinde geleneksel mlekilik sanatn yaatlma abas yzyllardr srmektedir. Avanosun kuruluundan beri gnlk kullanm ve ihtiyalara
ynelik retimin sz konusu olmas, bu sanatn bir zanaattan doduunu
ve ilk mleklerin insanlarn gnlk yaamlarnda eya ve kap kacak olarak
kullanm iin retildiini gstermektedir. Kzlrmakn getirdii olanaklardan
yararlanmaya alan yre halk, ayn zamanda onlar snrlayan durumlarla
da kar karyadr. Anadolunun mlekilik ve geleneksel el sanatlar merkezi konumunda olan Avanos yresinde, dier birok merkezde de olduu gibi
birok sorun yaanmaktadr.
Avanosun geleneksel amuru olan krmz kilin, geleneksellik zelliini ona
kazandran pime rengi, yal plastik kvam ve kullanmda yaratt kolaylklarn yan sra ustalarn ve mlekilik mesleini icra eden yre halkn, retim
ve tasarm asndan kstlayan birtakm zelliklere de sahiptir.

2. Avanosun geleneksel krmz kilinin piirim scaklnn dk olmas dk
dereceli srlarn oluturulabilmesi ve bulunabilmesi asndan yre mlekileri
iin sorun oluturmaktadr. Dk dereceli srlar daha ok gveler iinde effaf olarak kullanlmaktadrlar. Gvelerde kullanlan srlar yksek maliyetlerde
hazr olarak satn alnan srlardr. Bu yksek maliyetler dk fiyatlarda satlan mleklerin srlanmasn etkilemektedir. Bu durum seramik mantna son
derece aykr ve rnn kalitesini dren uygulamalar ortaya karmaktadr.
The efforts for keeping the traditional craft of pottery has been ongoing for
centuries in the Avanos region. That utilitarian ware being produced since
the foundation of Avanos indicates that this craft originated from a trade and
that the initial pots were produced for people to use in the day-to-day affairs. The people of the region, in an effort to make use of means provided by
Kzlrmak, at the same time faces situations restricting them. Like in other
centers, there are numerous problems that are experienced in the Avanos
region which is the pottery and traditional handicrafts section of Anatolia.
The red clay, which is the traditional clay of Avanos in addition to its firing
color, oily plastic consistency and being easy to use which make it traditional,
also has certain characteristics which restrict the people of the region and
masters involved in the trade of pottery in terms of production and design.
1. As a result of the decrease in demand for traditional Avanos pottery, in
recent years pottery makers of the region have moved towards different ceramic applications. Seeking touristic sales; decorated ware and china production has started, requiring the need for high temperature clay, lining and
glazes. These have moved pottery makers to more advanced other ceramic
centers like Ktahya and Iznik. Bringing ini clay and glazes from Ktahya
increases the cost of production. Ktahya china ware not consistent with the
traditional pottery making of the region and various ceramic ware reproduced
by casting technique have started to replace traditional pottery making.
2. The low firing temperature of Avanoss traditional red clay poses a problem for the pottery makers of the region for creating and availability of low
temperature glazes. Low temperature glazes are mostly used in transparent
form in casserole pots. The glazes used in casserole pots are glazes purchased readymade at high cost. This high cost affects the glazing of pots sold
cheap. This leads to practices in extreme contrast to the ceramic logic, bringing down the quality of the product. For example, in Avanos where terracotta
characteristic is dominant, ceramic forms are dyed with materials like car
rnein Terra Cotta zelliin hakim olduu Avanosta, seramik formlar, oto boyas, yat vernii vb. seramikle ilgisi olmayan malzemelerle boyanarak aslndan
uzaklatrlmaktadr.4 Tm bu uygulamalarn malzeme yetersizlii, var olan
malzemenin kalite dkl ve ekonomik skntlardan kaynaklanmaktadr.

odun sknts yaanmakta ve bu ihtiya tala, saman, ba ubuklar ve araba
lastikleri gibi evreye zarar veren birtakm malzemelerle karlanmaktadr. Bu
kirletici problem de ilenin iinde atlyesi olan, frn yakmak zorunda kalan
mlekiler iin zorlayc bir durum oluturmaktadr.
4. Hammadde, malzeme ve yakt sknts yannda Avanos mlekiliinin kar karya olduu birok sorun mevcuttur. Ekonomik skntlar ve teknolojinin
getirdii yenilikler de bu geleneksel sanatmz zor durumda brakmaktadr.
Sanayi devrimi ile birlikte gelen alkanlklar ve yeni teknoloji, mlekilik sanatnn teklik anlayn zedelemekte, ksa srede ucuz maliyetlerle retilen,
farkl materyallerden yaplan rnler insanlarn tercihi olmaya balamaktadr.
Gelien teknolojinin talep artna cevap vermeye almas kaliteyi drm, ucuzlamay balatarak kullanmda geleneksel olan ikinci plana itmitir.

low quality of available materials and economic problems.
3. Fuel shortage is a problem added to production cost. There is shortage
of fuel wood in the region and this demand is met using a set of materials
harmful to the environment like saw dust, hay, vine sticks and car tyres. This
pollutant problem makes life difficult for pottery makers with workshops in
the district who have to start fire in their kilns.
4. In addition to the problems of raw material, material and fuel, there are
others faced by Avanos pottery making. Economic problems and innovations
introduced by technology also put this traditional art in a difficult situation.
Habits earned with industrial revolution and new technologies impair the singularity concept of the art of pottery, wares produced cheap in a short time
made of different materials being opted for by people. The attempt of the
advancing technology to meet the increasing demand has lowered quality,
pushing the traditional into a secondary position in consumption, starting
lowering of prices.
The pot is based on the traditional, functional and/or technological needs
of consumption and the culture. Looking from this perspective and in results
of our studies, we see that in certain locations, one just has to settle for the
surviving photographs of pots already lost to technology and in other places,
the same vitality is still going on.5 Avanos region is one of those making an
effort to keep this vitality alive, having to continuously renew itself.
Yntem
Method
Firstly, a literature search was done on low temperature glazes under the
project. As a result of the search, low temperature glaze recipes fit for the
project were found and listed. After the search, new glaze recipes fit for the
project were created. After research, test plaques were prepared from glaze
specimens and underglaze stains and low temperature glazes prepared simultaneously were applied to the test plaques.
Bulgular
Findings
Proje kapsamnda 22 adet sr denemesi yaplmtr. Elde edilen sr denemesi sonularndan S11 kodlu sr denemesi sonular proje iin uygun grlm ve farkl oranlarda renklendiriciler ile renklendirilerek baarl sonulara ulalmtr.

Twenty-two glazes were tested under the project. Out of the derived glaze test
results, glaze specimens coded S11 deemed fit for the project and successful
results were achieved by coloring with different ratios of colorants. Colorant
oxides were applied to the glaze coded S11 in the following percentages.

How do you describe the present situation of the mining industry? What should change/be changed in the
mining industry as far as youre concerned?
Babakann 16 Haziran 2012 genelgesiyle birlikte ne yazk ki izinlerin alnma sresi ok uzad. Bu durum, pek ok firmay olduu gibi bizi de etkiledi.

izinlerimizi alyoruz, retim faaliyeti biten ocaklarmzdan ceketimizi alp

With Prime Ministers directive of June 16, 2012, unfortunately, the time period
required for obtaining permits became a lot longer. This, like many other firms,
affected us too. Although we started procedures two years ago for our new
quarry permit in anakkale, we were able to get our permit only last month.
Also, we are under the head light of environmental groups against miners
and mining. There is propaganda done without research that were murdering
the environment, yet if they would research a bit, they could see that we do
everything legally. We obtain our permits. We do not take our coats and leave
the quarries where production stops. We submit rehabilitation projects for forest
areas and deliver the land in line with the project to forestry departments. On
this subject, I expect authorities to bring together environmental groups and
miners in the same platform holding a set of new projects/seminars.

ARTI KALITE (Ankara) in collaboration with Ankara University School

I have 385 works in total including 135 published in international
technology journals, 34 in print and review, 15 in national journals,
134 international conference papers, 12 national conference papers,
3 invited articles, 2 workshops, 32 reports, 14 patents and 3 book
chapters on the subjects of thermal spray, glaze, conductor, semiconductor, superconductors, electro-optics, magnetic, flame retardants, radar absorbers, anti-bacterials, thermal radiators, self-cleaning ware and self-repairing materials. My studies have been cited
1100 times, 950 internationally and 160 nationally. I have served
as jury member in many journals and projects. Also, I introduced
to academic life 1 Post-Doc, 16 Ph.D. (9 completed, 6 ongoing), 16
graduate (10 completed, 6 ongoing) and 57 undergraduate students
in research activities as advisor and assistant advisor.
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
A biomaterial is a non-viable material that interacts with biological systems which is used in the production of a medical device. This denition is
somewhat restrictive, because it excludes materials used for devices such as
surgical or dental instruments. As a field of study, biomaterials combine different disciplines related with the physical properties, chemical compositions
and structures. As an interdisciplinary science, biomaterials are considered
the interactions between living and non-living materials. As a medical science, their goal is the improvement of the human health and quality of life.
Only a few of the materials known satisfy the requirements of implantation in
the body. These biomaterials belong to all 5 major classes of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and natural materials. Wide diversity of
these materials used in medicine is a result of materials research done in the
last 50 years by controlling the composition, purity, physical properties of the
materials and synthesizing new materials with new and special properties.
Exposure to body uids usually implies that the biomaterial is placed within
the interior of the body, and this places several strict restrictions on materials that can be used as a biomaterial. First and foremost, a biomaterial must
be biocompatibleit should not elicit an adverse response from the body,
and vice versa. Additionally, it should be nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. These
requirements eliminate many engineering materials that are available. Next,
the biomaterial should possess adequate physical and mechanical properties
to serve as augmentation or replacement of body tissues. For practical use,
a biomaterial should be amenable to being formed or machined into different
shapes, have relatively low cost, and be readily available.

ancak disperse olan paracklarn matris faz ile tepkisiz olacak ekilde seilmelerinden dolay glendirme artan scaklklarda ve uzun sre muhafaza edilebilmektedir. kertme sertletirmeli alamlar iin kelti bymesi
veya kelti faznn zlmesi sonunda sl ilem durumunda g art ortadan kalkabilir. Kitle iletkenlii iin, dispersiyon glendirme forml aada
verilmitir. Bu forml, sistemin her mekanik zellii tarafndan uygulanabilir.
Metals and metal alloys may be strengthened and hardened by the uniform
dispersion of several volume percent of ne particles of a very hard and inert
material. The dispersed phase may be metallic or nonmetallic; oxide materials are often used. Again, the strengthening mechanism involves interactions
between the particles and dislocations within the matrix, as with precipitation
hardening. The dispersion strengthening effect is not as pronounced as with
precipitation hardening; however, the strengthening is retained at elevated
temperatures and for extended time periods because the dispersed particles
are chosen to be unreactive with the matrix phase. For precipitation-hardened alloys, the increase in strength may disappear upon heat treatment as
a consequence of precipitate growth or dissolution of the precipitate phase.
Dispersion Strengthening Formula is given below for bulk conductivity. It can
be applied by every mechanical properties of the system.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
lk olarak, Pyrex cam, tane boyutunu azaltmak iin eki kullanlarak ezildi.
Granlatlar, parack byklnn daha da drlmesi iin eneli eziciye
verildi. Daha sonra, yaklak 15 dakika, bir har tcs kullanlarak tld. Dk viskoziteli, kolay akan cam paracklar elde edildi. Pyrex paracklarn temizlemek iin aseton eklenerek ok iyi kartrld, daha sonra
kez szlrek saat sreyle 50oCde kurutuldu. Bor oxit, pyrex ve hydroxyapatite, partiye % 5-7.5-10luk bor oksit katlarak deney kabnda kartrld.
Partilerin homojen hale getirilmesi iin asetona ek olarak toplam hacmin te
biri kadar zirkon toplarnn konulduu plastik kaplara yerletirildiler. Kaplarn
kapa, szntnn engellenmesi iin skca kapatld. Daha sonra, 24 saat ilendiler ve 50oCde 3 saat kurutuldular. Kurutulan karmlar frndan alndlar ve
datm homojen hale getirmek iin elle tekrar kartrldlar.
Firstly, Pyrex glass was crushed using a hammer to reduce its particle size. The granulates were fed to the jaw crusherfor further reduce the particle size. Then they were
further subjected to be ground using a mortar grinder for nearly 15 min. Low viscosity, easy flowing glass particles were obtained. In order to clean pyrex particles, aceton was added on them which were mixed very well, they were then filtered for three
times subsequently and dried at 50oC for three hours. Bor oxide, pyrex and hydroxyapatite were mixed in the beaker with 5- 7,5 -10% boron oxide addition into the batch.
In order to make batches homogeneous, they were put into plastic containers in which
zirconia balls were added one third of the total volume in addition with acetone. The
lid of the conatiners were closed firmly to avoid any leakage. They were then milled
for 24 hours and dried for 3 hours at 50oC for. Dried mixtures were taken out from the
furnace and were mixed again by hand to make homogeneous distribution.

SONULAR
Parti 1-3 iin 100 ve 2000 magnifikasyonda farkl sinterleme scaklklar iin
SEM analiz sonular ekil 1-24te verilmitir. Gzeneklilik dzeylerinin harman 1den parti 3e doru artt grlmtr. Ayrca, sinterleme scakl ile
birlikte cams faz miktarlar da artmtr. 1200oCde ekil 16 ve 24te devitrifikasyona iaret eden kristalitler de grlmtr. rneklerin yzeyleri ve kesitlerinin morfolojileri, beklendii gibi farkl idi ve morfolojiler presleme ynne
dik olarak oluan uzayan gzenek kanallar da sergiledi.
Next step was pelletizing during which 36 specimens were pressed for each
batch (Total # of samples was 108). Following the sintering SEM, XRD,
EDS and Dilatometry analysis were done. In order to determine density, Archimeds method, Bulk density method and Dispersion methods were used.
Bulk density calculation was done by dividing measured weigth to the calculated volume found using a caliper. Dispersion density was calculated using
eqn. 1.1. In order to determine Archimed density, dry weight, soaked weight
and suspended weight in water of the sample were measured, results were
calculated as follows:.

where wd is dry weigh, ws is soaked weigth and ww is suspended weigth
in water.
RESULTS
SEM analysis results are provided in Figures 1-24 for Batch 1-3, for different sintering temperatures at 100 and 2000 magnifications. It was seen that
porosity levels increased from batch 1 to batch 3. In addition, glassy phase
amounts also increased with sintering temperature. At 1100 and 1200oC,
crystallites indicating devitrification were also seen in Fig. 16 and 24. The
surface and cross sections of the samples had different morphology as expected and the latter exhibited elongated pore channels which were formed
perpendicular to the pressing direction.

Arimed kitle ve teorik younluk deerlerine gre, parti 1in dierlerinden yksek younlua sahip olduu sylenebilir. Bunun nedeni, yksek hidroksiapatit
ieriidir. Sinterleme scakl arttka younluk deerleri de artmtr. Yksek
younluklu partilerin minimum gzeneklilik dzeyi gsterdii de sylenebilir.
Gzeneklilik miktar, bileenlerin buharlamasndan dolay 1200oCde daha
yksekti. Gzeneklilik miktar, scaklk arttka artt. Dispersiyon, hacim ve Arimed younluk sonular birbirine benziyordu. Dehidrasyon ve/veya B2O3n
buharlamasndan dolay SEM analizinde baz gzenekler grld. Borun
atomik arl daha dktr. EDS ile alglanmas olas deildir.
10000C iin; faz Hidroksiapatit, Bor oksit ve Pyrex gzlemlendi. Koyu
alanlar, gzenekleri, daha geni dzeyli gri alanlar olaslkla hidroksiapatiti
ve beyaz alanlar olaslkla pyrex blgesini gsteriyordu. Presleme esnasnda
gereklemi olabilecek izgiler gzlemlendi. Homojen dalm da grlyordu. Genel olarak iki farkl faz arasnda oluan souma atlaklar da grld.
Bunlarn nedeni, homojen olmayan kartrma ve farkl fazlarn farkl bzme davranlar olabilir.
Harman 1den harman 3e doru pyrex miktar artt. Bu, ayn zamanda k fazlarndaki art sayesinde SEM grntlerinden de anlalabilmektedir. Harman 1den parti 3e doru bor oksit eklendike gzeneklilik miktar da artt.
Bor oksit buharlamas, arkasnda gzeneklilik brakt. Bundan dolay, parti
3n sngersi bir topolojisi vard.
11000Cde; Partinin kendisinde gzenekler vard. Karm homojendi. nce fiber kristalleri kolayca grlebiliyordu. Gzenekler, B2O3n buharlamas ve
hidrosil (OH-) iyonlar dolaysyla olumu olabilir. Scaklk arttka hidroksiapatit dnmeleri de gzeneklilie yol am olabilir. XRD analizi ile belirlenmesi gerekmektedir.
12000Cde; Grntlere gre, 12000Cde pyrexin faz dnm veya fazlarn olumas/buharlamasndan dolay dier scaklklara gre daha dk
pyrex grld sylenebilir. Gri ve siyah alanlar kolayca grlmektedir. Gri
alanlar, hidroksiapatit ve scak alanlar gzenekli alanlardr. Bytme arttka,
pyrex daha kolay grnebilmektedir. Gzenek dalm ve faz dalm hayli

DISCUSSION
According to the Archimed, bulk and theoritical density values, it can be said
that batch 1 had higher density than the others. This was due to the its high
hydroxyapatite content. Increasing sintering temperature also increased
density values. It could also be said that higher density batches showed
minimum porosity levels. Porosity amount was higher at 1200oC, which was
due to the evaporation of components. Porosity amount increased with increasing temperature. Dispersion, Bulk and Archimed density results were
similiar. Some pores have been observed in SEM analysis which were due to
the dehydration and/or evaporation of B2O3. Boron has lower atomic weigth.
It is very unlikely to detect it with EDS.
For 10000C; Three phases, Hydroxyapatite, Boron oxide and Pyrex were observed. Dark areas represent pores whereas gray areas with a larger surface
might be hydroxapatite and white araes might be pyrex region. Lines were
observed which might occured during pressing. Homogeneous distribution
was also apparent. Cooling cracks was also observed which occured generally between two different phases. They might be due to some inhomogeneous mixing and differences in shrinkage behavior of different phases.
From batch 1 to batch 3, pyrex amount was increased. It can be seen also
from the SEM images due to the increase amount of ligth phases. From batch
1 to batch 3 porosity amount increased along with boron oxide addition. Bor
oxide evaporation took place causing porosity behind itself. Due to the this
fact, batch 3 had sponge like topology.

Younluk deerleri, her deneyde parti 1den parti 3e doru oluum deiiklikleri gstererek azalmtr. Younluklar, Hacim yzdesi, Dispersiyon ve Arimet yntemleri ile ok benzer deerler gstermitir. Bu olgu; deerler, hesaplamalar ve deneylerin doru deerlendirilmi olduuna iaret etmektedir.
Hidroksiapatit miktarndaki dten dolay, younluklar azalmtr. Scaklk
arttka, younluk deerleri de artm, gzeneklilik ierii ise tersine azalmtr. Parti 3n yksek miktardaki gzeneklilik dolaysyla sngersi bir yaps
olmutur.
En yksek younluk deerinin elde edildii 12000Cde parti bir optimum sinterleme scakln vermitir.
Bor oksit buharlamas ve yeni bileimlerin kristalizasyonu, 1000oCnin zerinde gereklemitir. Mg-Al-K-P, O ile balanabilmekte ve XDR analizinden
grlebilen yeni fazlar da oluturabilmektedir.
Tridimitin yksek kristobaliteye dnmesinden dolay 11000Cde optimum
kristalinite gzlemlenmitir.
SEM grntlerine gre; aglomerasyon, souma atlaklar ve presleme izgileri grlm ve karm ve gzenek dalmlar hayli homojen olmutur.
Bor oksidin eklenmesinin nedeni, gzenekli oluumlar elde etmek idi. Sistemin biyoaktivitesini artrmak iin pyrex ve hidroksiapatit kullanlmtr.
For 11000C; Batch contained pores itself. Its mixture was homogeneous.
Thin fiber crystals could easily be seen. Pores could be occured due to evaporation of B2O3 and hydroxyle (OH-) ions. With heat, hydroxyapatite transformations could also take place. Evaporation of hydrate or phase changes
migth also be caused porosity. It must be determined by XRD analysis.
For 12000C; At 12000C from the images, it can be said that low pyrex was
observed than the other temperatures due to the phase transformation of
pyrex or creation/evaporation of phases.
Gray and black areas were easily identified. Gray areas were Hydroxyapatite and black araes were pore regions. With increasing magnification, pyrex was easily observed. Pore distribution and distribution of phases were
quite homogeneous. Cooling cracks were also observed. Bor oxide, Calcium
Hydrogen Phopshate, Sodium borate, Hydroxyle, Hexa-hydrobonite, Silicon
phosphade, Tridimiyte, Calcium phosphate hydrote, Silicon phosphade or OH
evaporation maid batches porous and also caused sponge structure. Increasing temperature much more porosity could be observed.
Batch 3 had higher porosity than the others and showed higher spongelike
morphology. Batch 3 also had acicular shape crystals which could be due to
the transformation of pyrex phases at 11000C. At lower temperatures pores
had longitudional shapes. With increasing temperature they could transform
into spherical shape. Increasing temperatures increased porosity amount. Increasing temperature also reduced pressing lines.
For batch 1; Batch 1 had high Hydroxyapatite amount. It contained more
pressing lines and less amount of porosity. SEM structure was seen gray because of high Hydroxyapatite ratio.
For batch 2; Its Hydroxyapatite and pyrex ratios were between batch 1 and
batch 3. It had higher porosity than batch 1 and had wider cooling cracks than
batch 1.
For batch 3; Batch 3 had high amount and largest porosity, also contained
more pyrex than the other batches. Contained more white phases than the
others. More amount of jelly phase could also be seen along with some agglomeration.

connection with preventing bathroom accidents and protecting children,
Mert and Adventurous Bear, continue with their school visits.
My safe bathroom which is a social responsibility project, started by E.C.A.
SEREL in collaboration with Istanbul Provincial National Education Office,
is reaching more and more children day by day with its recognition on the
rise. Under the project, which was started to convey the rules to be obeyed
in the bathroom to parents, informative and recreational promotion days
are organized in schools. The heroes of the project, Mert and Adventurous
Bear, created by renowned cartoonist Erdil Yaarolu, keep on visiting the
schools.
In 2012-2013 Academic Year, visits were held to Nilfer Hatun Primary SchooL, air Nedim Primary School, Bilge Soyak Primary School and ayrn
Primary School. Mert and Adventurous Bear also met the children and their
parents and Badat Street on April 23 National
Sovereignty and Childrens Holiday. On the occasion of the project, as 2013-2014 Academic Year
started, E.C.A. ElginkanPrimary School, Beyazt
Primary School, brahim Alaettin Gvsa Primary
School, Halil Atamavc Primary School, ehit retmen Hasan Akan Primary School, Deniz Primary School, Namk Kemal Primary School and
Zeki Obdan Primary School were visited. Books
and crayons were distributed to thousands of
children at the events where Mert and Adventurous Bear mascots were highly popular. Mert
and Adventurous Bear drew the attention of teachers as much as the children. The project will
continue in different schools through the year.
