Types of Forces

A force can
be a push or a pull on an object.
Forces can be measured using
a device called force meter. The unit of force is called the newton
represented by the symbol N. Force is a vector quantity. A vector is a
physical quantity described by magnitude (size) and direction.

Gravitational
Force

Normal Force

Tension Force

Spring Force

Magnetic Force

Applied force means a force with which an object has

been pushed or pulled by another object.
Gravitational force Gravitation is a force of attraction
between all objects in the universe. Gravitational forces
depend on the masses of objects and the distance
between them. Gravity is the force that only large objects,
like planets, exert on other objects.
Normal force Normal force is a part of gravitational
force. Normal force can be defined as the support force
exerted upon an object which is in contact with another
stable object. The normal force of the surface is equal to
the weight of the object pressing against it.
Frictional force is a force that acts between two surfaces
that are moving past one another. Frictional force opposes
(acts against) the motion of an object.
Air resistance force is the force of air pushing against a
moving object. Air resistance force is a type of frictional
force. Air resistance force depends on the speed and the
size of the surface area of the moving object.
Tension force is a force that stretches an object.
Tensional force is the force applied by an object being
stretched. Tensional force is directed along the stretched
object.
Spring force is the force that results when a spring is
compressed or stretched. If the spring is stretched, then
the spring force is attractive. If the spring is compressed,
then the spring force is repulsive.
Magnetic force Magnetic force is a push or a pull exerted
by a magnet. The force of attraction between an object
and a magnet is called magnetism.
