YouTube videos, guitars, recorders, hand drums, tambourines, DSO kids

Objectives
1. Students will be able to identify and describe the sound of
different renaissance instruments as well as identify their modern
counterparts.
2. Students will compare differences in sound and appearance
between each pair of instruments (when applicable).
3. Students will improvise on various renaissance instruments to
create a troubadour song.
Procedure
Review from yesterday: What activity was most of the secular
music written during the renaissance meant for? (dance)
Instrumental music: what was it called when you had many
different sizes of the same instrument? Can you list any
renaissance instruments?
C-4 in Green book: call on students to read and listen to different
recordings
Instruments
o Have list of renaissance instruments up on board and
separate list of modern counterparts: students will match
them throughout class
o For each instrument (pass out info sheets)
Show YouTube video of instrument
Describe sound, have students guess modern version
Show and listen to modern version, describe changes
o For Recorder discuss different variations: soprano, alto,
bass
o For Lute, review amount of strings on lute and other string
instruments
Troubadour Ensemble: Mary had a Little Lamb
o Guitars: 1 finger G chord
o Hand Drums: Steady Beat
o Tambourines: Rattle at different times

Assessment: Info sheets will be collected at the end of class. Other
assessment will include asking questions and listening to performance
of troubadour song
