Lesson one Day one

Daily topic: Social Studies with Zoo AnimalsMaps

Objectives:
Students will apply the knowledge presented about maps to utilize creativity
while learning. They will use terms such as compass rose, map legend, etc.
Through the WebQuest, students will learn:
o The names of the continents.
o Basic information about the continents such as population, number of
countries, and bodies of water that border each continent.
o About landforms on continent specifically highest mountain and longest
river.
o Which continents different zoo animals come from.
The students will:
o Identify the continent and oceans by name
o Correctly use a compass rose
o Present basic information regarding assigned continent
o Determine which animals come from which continents
This Webquest should be used after the students have been introduced to the
seven continents so that they have some background knowledge of the continents
Procedures:
1. The teacher will present the lesson through Prezi, explaining and discussing with
the students the various components of a map, including the title, compass rose,
map legend, symbols, and scale.
2. Through the Prezi, the teacher will also focus on continents. There, the students
will discuss characteristics of continents, along with basic information about each
continent.
3. The students will then complete a WebQuest, which includes the following:
a. Each group of three students will be assigned a continent
b. Together, they will then research that continent using the resources
provided
c. From that research, the students will create a PowerPoint as a group
including this information:
i. a map of the continent
ii. three countries within the continent labeled on the map
iii. the continent population
iv. the highest mountain
v. the longest river
vi. the bodies of water that border the continent (including the direction
using the compass rose)
d. Individually, each student will choose an animal from that continent that
they would like to include in the zoo. Each member of the group will have
their own slide for this part to present their animal.
e. In total, the presentation should have 11 slides with pictures on each,
including a final slide for sources.

4. From that, the students will present their PowerPoint presentations to the class
upon specific request by the teacher.
Outcomes:
Should be able to name all continents and oceans by name, and their relative
location using a compass rose
Should be able to use the Internet to conduct research
Should be able to present a PowerPoint to the classroom explaining their research
findings
Should be able to know which animals are derived from which continents,
including the type of habitat they live in.
Specify the materials needed for that day.
Individual computers with Wi-Fi
Microsoft Powerpoint
Teacher Computer with Projector
How do you accommodate students with special needs, non-native, and gifted:
Students with special needs will require most assistance from the teacher, who
should be prepared to offer help. These will be handled on a case-by-case basis
Non-native students should complete the assignment as they would any other
assignment (i.e., with help from a translator, etc.). Students will be placed in
groups based on intellectual ability in order for entire grou to achieve
understanding.
Gifted students are encouraged to go beyond and do more research on their parts
in the presentation. They will serve as leaders in their perspective groups.
