Background For Teachers:

Gather kid friendly magazines prior to this activity with proper photos.
Student Prior Knowledge:

Students will need to know what adjectives and active verbs are as well
as being knowlegeable on how to use pronouns correctly.
Intended Learning Outcomes:

The students will be able to Use concrete words and phrases along with a
wide array of sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
This helps gain understanding that words can mean other words as well
when use correctly.
Instructional Procedures:

Before the activity, I will explain why using a variety of words and
understanding how to choose words correctly in usages is important in
conversations. I will provide examples, and do an activity. Here is the
activity. 1) Instruct students to choose a picture from the provided
magazines that depicts an action. 2)Students will cut the picture from the
magazine. 3)Students will use a dictionary and thesaurus to find 6 verbs

and adjectives that depict the action of the cut-out magazine picture. 4)
The verbs and adjectives should be written on the blank word strips. Cutouts and verb strips can be attached to a class poster of vivid verbs.
5)Students will use the 6 verbs in a paragraph and gather in groups to
create a paragraph using all each 6 verbs and adjectives. 6) After this
group activity, students will do independent work and write a journal
entry using two of their favorite verbs and adjectives found in the
thesaurus and write what was done in that activity.
Strategies For Diverse Learners:

-adding varieties of magazines from different cultures, potentially in

different languages -Adding more textese kind of magazines and images
for the gifted students to challenge thinking -More colorful and full of
images kind of magazines for special needs. -I can also incorporate a
writing prompt that is based on cultural ideas or how to treat people
nicely using the words discovered in this activity. After this, students can
share their journal entries and challenge thinking as well as
incorporating others into this lesson.
Extensions:

TAKE HOME ACTIVITY: Have the students take home index cards
with the words learned and definitions. ALong with that, on the back of
these index cards, write three sentences EACH about home life for three
to five words learned that day.
Assessment Plan:

There will be homework that will be required to do.. Here is the TAKE
HOME ACTIVITY: Have the students take home index cards with the
words learned and definitions. ALong with that, on the back of these
index cards, write three sentences EACH about home life for three to
five words learned that day. I will use this activity to gauge if students
know how to interchangeably use words. For an in-class assessment,
Place a clothesline across a corner of the classroom. Place the rubric
numbers 1-3-5 at the intervals on the clothesline. Discuss the following
rubric criteria as a class. 1 - The writer struggles with a limited
vocabulary, searching for words to convey meaning. 3- The language is
functional, even if it lacks much energy. It is easy to figure out the
writer's meaning on a general level. 5 - Words convey the intended
message in a precise, interesting, and natural way. The words are
powerful and engaging. Students will work with a partner to evaluate
and place each paragraph on the clothesline. Teacher can assess and
discuss placement of paragraph.
