Students will understand and be able to explain the electoral college and the party
presidential candidate nominating system. This will include being able to list the formal
qualifications to become president, the roles of the president, explain how convention
delegates are selected, describe the format of the national party conventions and
understand the vocabulary related to the office of the presidency. Students will need to
understand the flaws with the electoral college and some of the proposed reforms that
have been offered to fix it. It is also important that students recognize the role of the office
of the Vice President and why presidents have been hesitant to give the Vice President
more power.
