Task title: Inquiry-based lesson: investigating a key

mathematical concept for KG and primary levels

Course code: EDU 1802
Course name: Introduction to math and science in the
classroom

Student name: Fatima Bilal

ID number: H00328662
Course teacher: Basel Badran

In my report, I will write about the design of the math activity

which is about (classifying), and I will lesson according to the 5Es.
The 5Es are, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
First, Engage.
Definition: Engage is the first step of the 5Es, in this step, the
students will be ready for the lesson and have an idea about the
lesson that they will take.
-In my lesson, I will engage the children by showing them a video
about colors and sizes and shapes, and I will start singing with
them so they can feel ready to learn.
Second, Explore.
Definition: Explore is the second step in the 5Es, the students can
identify and develop concepts, process, and skills, and they also
can explore the things or the materials that they will take it in the
lesson.
- I will let the students explore some shapes and certain colors,
like I will give them a big orange square, and I will tell them that
this is the shape square, and its big, and the color of it is orange,
so they will know the size, shape, and the color.
Third, Explain.
Definition: Explain is the third step in the 5Es, which is the part
that helps the student to explain the concept they have been
exploring it.
- I will discuss and talk to the children about what we explored
and saw, and I will ask them about the shapes, and so on, so they
can differentiate between them.

Fourth, Elaborate.
Definition: In this step of the 5Es, the learners can use their new
knowledge in real life, by connecting their lesson into their life
style.
-The students will start to talk about the shapes, size and color by
saying this is big, yellow, and its square and I will let them draw
it so they can have an experience about how they can draw it and
to recognize it by themselves. And also, I will let them see the
shapes that are in the class so they can recognize it in their real
life.
Fifth, Evaluate.
Definition: In this step, the learners encourage to assess their
understanding and abilities. And they will talk about the activity
that they did to improve their understanding.
-I will bring a paper with a picture of a shape, and I will ask them
about it, and they have to tell me what they see, so I can make
sure that they understand it.
In the end, the 5Es are useful and good for the lesson plan, and it
could be easier for the teacher when she explains the lesson, and
for the students, because they will understand it by doing and
applying in the classroom, as Piaget said learning by doing.
