irregularwithabruptchangeofgrade.Insuchcases,averticaldropisprovidedtostepdownthecanalbedand
thenitiscontinuedwithpermissibleslopeuntilanotherstepdownisnecessary.Thisisdonetoavoid
unnecessaryhugeearthworkinfilling.Suchverticaldropsareknownascanalfallsorsimplyfalls.
NecessityofCanalFalls:
Whentheslopeofthegroundsuddenlychangestosteeperslope,thepermissiblebedslopecannotbe
maintained.Itrequiresexcessiveearthworkinfillingtomaintaintheslope.Insuchacasefallsareprovided
toavoidexcessiveearthworkinfilling.
Whentheslopeofthegroundismoreorlessuniformandtheslopeisgreaterthanthepermissiblebed
slopeofcanal.Inthatcasealsothecanalfallsarenecessary.
Incrossdrainageworks,whenthedifferencebetweenbedlevelofcanalandthatofdrainageissmallor
whentheF.S.Lofthecanalisabovethebedlevelofdrainagethenthecanalfallisnecessarytocarrythe
canalwaterbelowthestreamordrainage.
