Introduction/Motivation
Students will go about their usual morning routine with their
normal classroom teacher - Mat session with their teacher
Students will then be introduced to Notre Dame students - Still
seated on mat
ND students (Ebony) will introduce their activities to students
and give brief explanation of activities
We will put you into pairs and hand you a sheet of paper
On the sheet you will have the beginning of a word
Using the metal detectors you must find the ends of words in
the sand and stick them to where you think they belong to
make a word
The Second activity we would like you to do is play a game on
the iPads called Osmo
You will have an image appear on the screen and all you have
to do is spell it out in front of the screen
The third activity is using pic collage on the iPads. We will go
outside and you will take a photo of one of the images we have
scattered around the grass. Then you will take photos of the
letters that spell out this image, then we are going to make a
collage of the image and the letters that spell it.
Once ND students have finished explaining the different
activities the classroom will be separated into two
Ebony, Lydia and Katie will then separate their group into
threes. Two groups of 5 and one with 4.

Resources
-Osmo
-PicCollage
-Metal detectors

Lesson 1 Steps- Metal detectors

1. The teacher will explain to the class about the activity. At this
point the teacher will describe what the magnetic detectors
are and how to use them. Teacher will show how the metal
detectors attract the paper clips.
2. Students organised into groups
3. The students take turns using the detectors finding the
pieces of paper attached to paper clips in the sand
4. The pieces of paper will be announced as treasure to
provide opportunity for imaginary play
5. On the piece of paper is the rest of the word that the
students have to link up to the letters provided to them on a
worksheet.
6. After all the words are found, the student will sound out and
decode
7. There will then be a discussion with their peers and the
teacher about other variations of words that could be made.
Lesson 2 Steps- PicCollage
1. The lesson will be set up out side
2. Spread around the area are letters and pictures
3. Students have to go around the area with their iPads and
take a photo of the image they find, e.g. a cat
4. Then they have to go around and find the letters that spell
that word, e.g. C-A-T
5.

5. Then the students will make a pic collage of a photo of the

image and include the photos of the letters that spell that image
Lesson 3 Steps- Osmo
1. Students sit on the desk with the iPad with the Osmo app
ready
2. An image appears on the osmo app and the students have to
put physical letters in front of the screen that spell out what is
on the screen
One teacher will be at each station
The group of 14 will be split into three groups
There will be 17 minute cycles and then the students rotate
activities, having one go at each station.

Lesson Closure:
-With all the students back together, teachers will talk
about both activities.
-Discuss what other words we came up with that can be
segmented and rearranged
-Ask students what they enjoyed most about each activity
-Ask 3 students to show their collages.
Transition:
-Thank students for their morning time
-Normal classroom teacher will take over for preparing
them for their usual class.
Assessment:
