What are the first few things that happened when you walked into

the hospital? Did you have to sit in a wheel chair? Put on a hospital
gown? Told to stay in bed? Basically what did they do to prep you for
birth? (She gave me a lot of detail about her labor since it went on
for so long before her birth)
On Saturday November 2, 2013, I went into labor with my son. It was
around 10:30 at night when I began to feel slight cramping and decided to
time my contractions. I called the doctor when my contractions became 2
minutes apart consistently which took until about midnight to happen.
When she got to the hospital after throwing up everything she had
eaten earlier that day she said she was able to walk into CMC University and
head right up to the maternity floor no wheelchair.
I was hooked up to a contraction monitor to check the progress of my
contractions and verify that I was in labor. They checked to see if I was
dilated and decided I was 1cm and asked me to spend 1 hour at the hospital
walking in a loop around the maternity floor. At this point I was wearing a
hospital gown and nonslip socks and I was also given a blanket. After an hour
they checked me again and I was still only 1cm dilated.
At this point they sent her home where she continued to walk around
and have contractions. Since her labor was continuing, around 4pm that
Sunday she decided to go back to the hospital, I again walked up to the
maternity floor and was immediately triaged. I was hooked up to a
contraction reader and again they verified I was having contractions. When
they went to check my dilation however, I was still 1cm dilated. My
contractions were indeed getting stronger but I still was making no
progress.
Since there was no progress they again sent her home but at 11:30 pm
that day she went back to the hospital because of how intense the
contractions were.
I again walked up to labor and delivery where I had to continually stop
to contract and then begin walking again. I immediately was sent to triage
where again I was given a gown and socks and hooked up to a contraction
monitor. When they checked me this time I was 4cm dilated and they finally
told me I would be getting a room to be admitted for birth! I had to wait
about 30 min for them to get an open clean room and then I moved all of my
belongings into the room.
Where you given Pitocin and/or any other drugs? Did you want/get
an Epidural?
The first thing I did when I walked into the hospital room was ask for
an enema so I would not have to be concerned about anything weird
happening during my delivery based on other peoples horror stories I had
heard..
She has scoliosis so she informed the doctor so he could determine the
best way to give the epidural which she was able to have the entire time.

Later on in her labor she was given Pitocin around 11:30am to help
continue the labor since she was stuck around 7 cm and that she could feel
some of the contractions through the epidural.
How often did they check your progress?
After about 4 hours of the nurses checking on me every 30 minutes I
tried to rest up for the delivery process. My labor was progressing about 1cm
every few hours.
Were you allowed to eat and/or given an IV?
I began to feel extremely nauseous so I asked my boyfriend to grab
some ice chips for me because once I was admitted into the hospital I was no
longer allowed to eat.
She was also hooked up to an IV.
Did they use a fetal monitoring system?
After her heart rate dropped her and the baby were monitored
constantly.
My blood pressure had quickly dropped to 56/30 and the babys
heartbeat dropped to 70. I felt like my body was shutting down. They flipped
my bed upside down almost to allow more blood to flow to my heart and
head, they broke my water, and immediately put a fetal heart monitor on the
babys head to get a better read of how he was doing. After a few bags of
ephedrine and about 30-45 min me and the baby were completely stabilized.
I was given an oxygen mask to wear and asked to lay on my side so the baby
and I could have better blood flow.
How was your birth? Who was allowed in the room with you?
Fortunately, that was an isolated incident and the rest of the labor
went smoothly.
Within 30 minutes of her getting the Pitocin she finally reached 10 cm.
She pushed for 30 minutes and finally at 1:07pm that Monday her baby
boy was born.
I was happy that I was able to have my entire labor and delivery in
the same room and I remained in that room the entire time I was in the
hospital. My mom, boyfriend, and best friend were all in the room with me
along with two nurses and a doctor during the time of my delivery.
What happened right after birth? Did they check him quick, Vitamin
k shots? Were you allowed time to bond right after birth? Did you
spend a lot of time with your baby in the hospital or did the nurses
mostly watch him? How long did you stay in the hospital after?
Immediately after the birth and the cord was cut the baby was rushed
over to be given his vitamin shots and weighed and measured. As soon as
they finished with the weight and everything they immediately brought him

back to do skin to skin with me. He laid on my chest for a few hours in order
for us to bond properly. I was able to spend all of my time in the hospital with
the baby except for the time he was taken out for circumcision, jaundis
checks, and to get whatever shots or routine monitoring they needed. He
stayed in the room with me all night and all day also except for the second
night when he was extremely fussy and I needed the nurse to take him to the
nursery for an hour.
She stayed in the hospital for 48 hours after birth and was the able to
return home.
However, after the incident they asked me to sign documents saying
if it were to happen again that I would be rushed into emergency surgery for
a c-section.
