Context of the lesson

This is the second lesson of the new unit, it is about how the heart works.
Teaching goal
The aim of this lesson is to identify the circulatory system job and types of blood
vessels that it contains.
Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson the students will be able to identify the circulatory system and
how does vessels work.
Inquiry:
Model the two types of arteries and veins in the heart and identify their functions.
Assumptions about prior learning
The students already know that circulatory system is about heart, but they don't know
there are other parts inside the heart called blood vessels (arteries and veins).
Anticipated problems and possible solutions
P: Some low-level students might face difficulties in modeling arteries and veins moves
and distinguishing between them.
S: I will include them with high-level students in modeling stage to support them in the
group as well as I will monitor them during the lesson by asking oral questions and
giving some extra explanations.
Personal focus for this lesson
I will focus on the time division for each task because I only have 40 minutes.
I will monitor the low-level students and guide them since it is a student-centered
lesson.

Question:
What organ does the circulatory system
belongs to?
How does the heart works?
What are blood vessels?
How many types are blood vessels?
What does veins and arteries carry?
What are the differences between veins
and arteries?
Why do you think we need both?

Main tasks or activities

1. Engage: Who is the winner?

Materials
A4 numbered and colorful papers (1,2,3)
Sticker or pencils as rewards
2. Explore: Video (Circulatory System) and Computer
take notes
Projector
Pencils
3. Explain: Discuss as a group your notes
Worksheets
Crayons and colors
4. Elaborate: Design your own heart blood Plastic plates
vessels
Wools (red & blue)
Glues
5. Evaluate: present your heart design.
Scissors
Video (YouTube)
Timer (online)

Engage
Who is the winner?
5 minutes

At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will explain the game rules, the first who
answer correctly will step forward on the A4 colorful numbers until she got to the YOU
WON paper (in the middle).
Questions:
Mention the organ pumps blood through your body
What is the main organ for this system?
What is the difference between circulatory system and respiratory system?
What are the blood vessels? How it differs/works?
Which one you think more important? Arteries or veins and why?
Teacher (What will the teacher do/say etcetera)
The teacher will choose two students each time (for
saving time the teacher will do it only twice).
The teacher will ask the questions about the circulatory
system to test their prior knowledge, then she gives
points for the correct answer.
The winner will get a gift like sticker or a pencil.

Student (What will the

student do/say etcetera)
The chosen students will
come in front of the board.
The students will answer
the teacher's questions
about circulatory system
and if it was correct they
will step forward from
number 3 to 1 until they got
the YOU WON paper. 8

Activity: watch the video and write down important notes on the
worksheets.

are they? How they work in circulatory system? What do they carry? Which
direction?

Teacher (What will the teacher do/say etcetera)

The teacher will show a video that explains arteries and
veins function on the projector, as well as gives them
their worksheets to take notes during the video.

Student (What will the

student do/say etcetera)
The students individually
and at their desks will
explore about blood vessels
and write down notes from
the video that they think
are important.

Explain
Group discussion
5 minutes
In group, students will share and discuss about their notes and explorations. Then,
each group would have time to present their notes, who covers the more relevant will
receive gifts.
The teacher will use the timer so everybody ends the discussion when the time ups
and then share it.
Elaborate
The activity: Design a heart plate with arteries and veins
15 minutes
The students will design in groups a heart model by using plates, colors, gules,
scissors, as well s wools to represent the veins and arteries arrows for blood moving
from and to the heart. They have to collaborate together and search or use the text
book for information.
The teacher will monitor and guide them during the task. As well as set a timer to
make more interesting and well managed.

Evaluate
Present your heart plate.

Knowledge Learning Objectives:

To identify the function and direction of arteries and veins in the circulatory.
Assessment Instrument:
By presenting their model as well as explaining the model
Teacher (What will the teacher do/say etcetera):
The teacher will give for each group to present their work and provide feedback if needed.
Student (What will the student do/say etcetera)
Each group will present their plate with an explanation why they done it that way.
