Section VII: Planning for the Future

Group 1: Elma Daniel, Kelsey Kicklighter, Kristan Price, & Jimi Waters
Goal 1: Improve the overall
appearance and atmosphere
of the media center to align
with our goal of providing a
safe, open environment that
gives the students, staff, and
community the freedom to
explore interests and
information.
Rationale: The student
stakeholder survey showed
that the majority of students
did not want to use the media
center because it did not
have a friendly atmosphere,
the seating was
uncomfortable, and more
space was needed for
collaboration and quiet areas.
Empowering Learners,
Building the Learning
Environment, Guideline III:
The SLMS should, create
an environment that is
conducive to active and
participatory learning,
resource-based learning, and
collaboration with teaching
staff.

Objective 1a: The SLMS will

purchase comfortable
chairs/seating and lamps and
rearrange the media center to
include areas for small group
and large group collaboration,
quiet work stations, and
technology centers.

Evaluation 1a: Once the new

seating areas have been
created and the dcor has
been updated with new
seating and lighting, students
will be surveyed using a
digital tool to collect data
about satisfaction and
effectiveness.

Objective 1b: Incorporate

additional inspirational, and
instructional signage for
users to create a welcoming,
educational environment
where students want to
research and explore. This
will aid students in reaching
their learning objectives.

Evaluation 1b: New signage

will be posted and visible in
the media center.

Objective 1c: Increase the

hours of operation to give
students and staff more
opportunities and time to
utilize the media center to
create, produce, and
collaborate before and after
school.

Evaluation 1c: The media

centers expanded hours will
be posted on the website, at
the entrance, advertised at
faculty meetings, and when
students utilize the media
center. The SLMS will
implement a digital sign-in
sheet for users at the
beginning of the year to
assess the number and
reasons for visits to the
media center. Those numbers
will be evaluated every month
to see which areas are being
used most and if participation
increases during the
expanded hours.

Goal 2: Increased
collaboration with teachers to
ensure students are given
instruction on multiple
literacies.

Objective 2a: The SLMS will

create and implement a
library orientation program for
first-year students to be
conducted in collaboration

Evaluation 2a:
Simple surveys or
knowledge-assessments will
be conducted to confirm the
effectiveness of the

Rationale: The results of the

survey showed more than
60% of the students were not
proficient in multiple
literacies, including digital
research tools such as
Galileo.
Empowering Learners,
Teaching for Learning,
Guideline III: The school
library program provides
instruction that addresses
multiple literacies, including
information literacy, media
literacy, visual literacy, and
technology literacy.

Goal 3: Purchase new books

and periodicals for the
collection that are current and
appeal to a wide variety of
teachers and students, and
purchase additional
computers and tablets to
increase the availability of

with the ELA teachers.

Training will be provided in
the Media Center on research
techniques and information
literacy, including but not
limited to, learning to use
Galileo for research projects.

orientation and remedial

programs. The SLMS will
develop two research-based
scavenger hunts, one to be
given before and after the
orientation and remedial
training, This will allow the
SLMS to assess prior and
post knowledge without it
seeming too much like a
chore for the students.

Objective 2b: The SLMS will

collaborate with classroom
teachers to incorporate
multiple literacy skills into
lessons. The SLMS will
create and co-teach a
general overview
presentation to demonstrate
research options, including
GALILEO for students.
Students should be informed
of where to find the password
for GALILEO and also how to
access it via the school
website.

Evaluation 2b: After students

have been taught how to use
certain web-enhanced skills,
students will use them to
complete projects. The
teacher and the SLMS will
perform formative evaluations
of student work as they are
creating it as well as provide
feedback on completed
projects. The teacher and
SLMS will have the created
works to show as proof that
teacher/SLMS collaborative
efforts have been effective.

Objective 2c: The SLMS will

collaborate with teachers to
instruct and emphasize the
importance of the acceptable
use of researched
information, how to cite
sources properly, and Web
2.0 tools available to create
citations.

Evaluation 2c: Using rubric

components collaboratively
created between the SLMS
and the classroom teachers,
students will be evaluated as
they use web 2.0 tools that
have been implemented into
the classroom environment
as well as how well they cite
sources.

Objective 3a: The SLMS will

work with administrators
regarding the budget,
implement fundraising events
including two book fairs,
apply for a grant with regards
to technology in schools, and
ask the PTO board members

Evaluation 3a: Profits from

book fairs will be recorded in
a spreadsheet along with any
other funds received from
grants received and/or
financial assistance from
stakeholders. The SLMS will
also track in this spreadsheet

technology in the media

center for teacher/class
usage and individual usage.
Rationale: According to the
survey, a very small number
of students checked out
books due to the inadequate
collection. 34.5% of students
surveyed indicated that a
better selection of books
would encourage them to visit
the library more.
The majority of the students
also expressed the desire
and need for additional
computers or digital
equipment.
Empowering Learners,
Building the Learning
Environment, Guideline III:A
school library program
includes a well-developed
collection of books,
periodicals, and non-print
materials in a variety of
formats that support
curricular topics and are
suited to inquiry learning and
users need and interests.

for financial assistance in

purchasing new materials for
the media center. New
materials will be purchased
based on the budget and
collection plan.

how each of the funds are

allocated for new print and
digital materials. The SLMS
will track the circulation of
new materials and report on
usage monthly to determine
whether funds are being used
in the most effective manner.

Objective 3b: The Media

Specialist will survey and
research the types of books
the students and teachers
prefer and find similar books.
The SLMS will build a wish
list from stakeholders and
devote what portion she can
every school year into
building up the library
collection. The Media
Specialist will enroll in library
subscription programs such
as the one provided by Junior
Library Guild. Donors
Choose projects will also be
created to assist in funding
the book collection.

Evaluation 3b: Circulation

rates from teachers and
students will be taken before
and after the influx of new
books to determine the effect
and usage of the new
materials. This will be done
several times throughout the
year.

Objective 3c: Purchase

additional computers and/or
tablets to support a full class
of students to be used for
collaborating with teachers,
plus an additional technology
section for students that are
working independently or in
small groups. Make 50
technological devices
available at all times, which is
a purchase goal of 18
additional devices.

Evaluation 3c: The number of

computers and tablets
purchased with funds will
serve as an evaluation. The
SLMS will also use the signin/usage sheets to evaluate if
the digital equipment is
sufficient for the students
needs or if a wait time is
extensive. This will be
evaluated on a continual
basis throughout the year,
giving specific attention to
evaluating peak times.
