How effective is the

Immigration Policy in the US?

By Alan Mizera

Introduction
For centuries people have been immigrating
across the world for better opportunities at
life. To some, the life of moving to a
different country is very stressful due to
improper knowledge or certifications. But in
the US today, we have policies that reform
and organize immigration from all over the
world, due to large waves of immigrants
moving from unlivable environments.
The requirements to attain passage into
American soil depends entirely on your
characteristics. What I mean by this is, if
you are a wealthier more educated person,
you would have a better chance to enter then
someone who is poor, unskilled, low-wage
immigrants. Most people are not aware of
the policy that the US government puts into
place to organize and reform immigration
from all around the world. The public should
be aware of policies that our government
puts out so we can vote and change them to
our liking.

Recently, many experts have been studying

the effects of immigration and found no
links to a deprived economy. The research
suggest that immigration may result in lower
wages for some native-born worker with
lower skill sets. So to say that immigration
will affect the country in negative ways has
never actually seen the statistics and
research. What I wanted to learn from my
sources is first hand experiences of families
immigrating to a new country, so I can see
how they felt about starting over.
Method
To answer my research question--how
effective is the immigration policy in the
US?I created a survey that I distributed
around my campus to college students. This
survey contained 10 questions that asked the
participant there opinion on immigration and
also challenged their knowledge on the
current issue of immigration policies.

Experts
How effective is the immigration policy in
the US? Based on all the information
provided to us from Ran Abramitzky of
Stanford University, there have been 2
important waves of immigrants coming into
the US. The most recent wave was in the
20th century where the policy got stricter
because of the influx of immigrants from
Eastern Europe.

The purpose of this survey was to examine

college students and their awareness to our
current immigration policies. I asked young
college students between the ages of 19 - 25
because I wanted a fresh and straight
forward answer resulting in them thinking
through their own knowledge about
immigration policies. Out of 23 participants
80% believe people should have a chance to
move and start a new life, while 70% think

that diversity is good for the American

society.
Results
The results from my survey portrays many
of the participants to be open minded to the
idea of immigration. Many of the
participants were open to discussion on the
effects on immigration and were very
positive about the policies of immigration
but also the history of it. The participants
were all young individuals that have their
own ideas and opinions on immigration
which made it that more refreshing to
question.
Discussion
The findings I have acquired from the
survey appear to confirm that most
participants approve of people moving to
another country but they wont leave the US
themselves. Not only this but the survey
suggest that more than 80% of the
participants have a friend or relative that is
foreign-born. This appears to confirm that
the participants have been introduced to
people that are foreign and have immigrated
here in the past. This in itself suggest that
the immigration policies are effective to the
point where 90% of my participants have a
foreign born friend. Although most

participants agree to the immigration

policies, there has been 20% of the
participants who disagree that diversity is
good for American society.
Conclusion
The American society has been forged from
immigrants from centuries ago, todays
policies have been changing rapidly due to
different events unfolding in our timeline. I
do not think immigration lowers economy
standards but rather improves it at a much
lower cost. We as humans have the common
response to repent from people of other
cultures and backgrounds because we are
just ignorant at first about others until we
know them as a friendly individual such as
ourselves. I think America is where this idea
of being a mosaic of ethnicity really
blossoms, because America was built from
nothing by foreigners of different regions.
We should care about immigration because
it is an issue that is never going to go away
no matter what we do about it. Immigration
has been around since the beginning of
America and is only going to evolve into
something more depending on our policies.
A problem we cannot ignore because we all
deserve freedom and liberty no matter what
your background or ethnicity is. We as a
nation should grow together and not be
divided by our skin or culture.
