UNIT
WEEK 1 INTRODUCTION TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND THE HEROS JOURNEY

Show Introduction to Greek Mythology PPT to students (found on Faculty Shared Drive)

Create the Greek Mythology Schema chart


o Have students fill out My Greek Mythology Schema card and put it in the chart folder
o Share whole group and have students add to the chart using sticky notes, add to chart
throughout unit
o Move schema sticky notes to misconceptions if they are proved untrue
o Have students fill out My New Learning About Greek Mythology card and add to new
learning section as unit progresses

Allusions from Greek Mythology


o Introduce Today, we us terms that derived from Greek myths and characters. We will
look at 4 Greek myths from which common allusions are used today: Hercules, Achilles,
King Midas, and Pandora
o Read and discuss attached Greek Myths Achilles, Hercules, King Midas, Pandora
o Students will complete the Allusions from Greek Mythology packet. They will define the
allusion from each myth read as well as color the mythological character.

Identifying archetypes in Greek myths


o Introduce Archetypes the typical type of character you would find in a myth
o Create a circle map of the archetypes/typical characters that students think might be
found in a myth hero, mentor, trickster, etc
o Review details about the Achilles, Heracles, King Midas, and Pandora myths
What kinds of archetypes are in these stories? What characteristics do each of
the main characters have?
o Complete characteristics traits packet and complete the brainstorming activity for each of
the myths main characters
o Discuss with students other stories that they have read or are familiar with that have
similar archetypes

The Heros Journey


o Discuss and create a bubble map what is a hero?
o Discuss - In any given story about a hero, the hero will have typical behavior patterns.
This behavior pattern of a hero in a text is called, The Heros Journey. We will be using
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief as a model for The Heros Journey.
o Hand out Heros Journey packet.
o Discuss outline and graphs/diagrams
o Explain that as we read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief we will be stopping
periodically to identify what stage of the heros journey Percy is in
