1.

The Power and Control wheel points out specific things that we have already
discussed about domestic abuse. It revolves around the idea that the abuser is actively
trying to control the person being abused through isolation violence. The whole wheel
being surrounded by violence definitely ties the whole idea together very well. The idea
that a person is not an abuser when they arent actively abusing their partner is a false
idea that this wheel helps recognize. All the tactics in the wheel, such as Isolation and
Intimidation were all sorts of things that we discussed when we discussed relationship
violence as well.
2. Hooks adds to the conversation by pointing the finger not only at male abusers
abusing their female partners, but at females that abuse their children. She states that
the nature of violence itself needs to be addressed and changed, and for feminists it is
not enough that we just focus on male violence. It is important for us to work on ending
all interpersonal violence. She states how this culture of violence is brought upon by
patriarchal thinking and culture where it is believed that there is a dominant hierarchy
and those that are above another are to take control in whatever means possible. This
can lead to violence towards spouses and violence towards children. She adds to the
fact that it is sexist thinking that gives us the idea that women are always victims and
men are always abusers. It is important to look on the fact that women can abuse
children, and that not all domestic violence cases are with heterosexual couples.
3. Rubio and Cruz Opposed the Violence Against Women Act, so Voters Must
Oppose Their Candidacy. Lottie Shackelford. March 9, 2016. The Root.
The article is an editorial from the author, Lottie Shackelford, addressing how both
Senator Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz both did not vote to keep the Violence against
Women Act. 22 Republican senators did not vote to keep the act. The writer says that
this makes them candidates that are not helpful to women and their health. These two
candidates also did not vote on the Affordable Care Act, which would make being a
victim of domestic abuse no longer be considered a pre-existing condition so that
women who were victims of domestic abuse could receive medical care. In terms of the
Power and Control wheel, this could be considered a part of the idea of male privilege. It
revolves around the idea that women dont deserve this sort of help and that it isnt their
place to ask for it. This also keeps them economically inferior because of the cost of
medical bills required to treat them and it revolves around the idea of violence and the
normalcy of it and refusal of others to stand up for it.
4. Bell hooks would definitely say that this is an example of patriarchal violence.
Both senators are males that have been taught throughout their lives that they are meant
to be in power and in control and while they are not seen using direct violence to keep
this control, they are in some ways enabling it for others. She would say that this culture
of violence has to be stopped and these are not the presidential candidates that will help
us end this violence.
