Title: Simon Says Geometry!

Date: April 26, 2016

Teacher: Emily Aron

School: Oak Elementary School

Class: KIN 355

Equipment Used:
Grade Level: 4

Time: 8 minutes
Targeted NASPE Standard(s): 1, 5
Specific Objective: Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute,
obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in twodimensional figures. (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.1)
Concomitant Objective: Students will stay physically active while demonstrating
safe playing techniques.

Set Induction: How many of you have ever played

Simon Says? Have any of you played it at recess or
during PE? Do you like being Simon or no?

Learnable Piece: Today we are going to review some of

the geometry terms we have been learning in this unit, in
preparation of the upcoming test!

Presentation of New Material/Directions:

Present PowerPoint that shows images of the
terms
o *Briefly say definition while demonstrating
movement
o *Have students demonstrate motions while
sitting in chairs
o Line: straight, infinitely long in both
directions
o Line segment: straight, connects two
points, has definite end points
o Parallel lines: lines that never meet, same
distance apart
o Perpendicular lines: lines that are at right
angles to another
o Intersecting lines: lines that cross over,
have a common point
o Right angle: equal to 90 degrees

o Acute angle: less than 90 degrees

o Obtuse angle: more than 90 degrees, but
less than 180
Explain Simon Says! (can be shorter if students
know of game already)
o We will split off into 4-5 small groups, stay
standing
o Each group will have a Simon
o Simon will get a sheet of paper with all of
the possible terms to say
o If Simon goes Simon says then the rest
of the group represents the term with their
hands as quickly as possible
o If Simon doesnt say it, then no one
should move
o For todays game, if someone does move,
they are not out
o After several rounds, switch who the
Simon is and make sure everybody gets
a turn!
o I will bring us all together again at the end
and will do the call/response to get your
attention
Safety: respect each others space, do not hurt
yourselves or others while playing
Check for understanding:
o What do you do if you hear Simon Says
make an acute angle?
o What do you do if you hear Make parallel
lines?
o When do you stop playing?
Ask if there any more questions
Transition:

Split students into 4-5 groups
Have groups go to a designated area of
classroom
Give each group a geometry terms sheet
Students may begin playing once they have the
sheet and have determined the first Simon
Activity:
Takes place in a classroomdesks should be
pushed in enough that there is ample space for
the small groups around the room
Monitor students and give feedback while they
are reviewing terms/playing the game
Once it has been several minutes, do the call and
response
At the end of playing, I will regroup students to go

over the lesson and objectives

Possible Modifications:
Omit/add geometry terms
Do a large group of Simon Says
Have people able to get out, and then see who is
the last person in the game
Lesson Review: Review learnable piece about
geometry terms.
What is the difference between an acute angle
and an obtuse angle?
What is a line segment?
Who can show me parallel lines?
