cation.html

Objectives

SWBAT determine products of single digit

multiplication mentally.
SWBAT correctly identify which numbers make up the
same products (4 x 3=12 and 6 x 2=12).
SWBAT gain speed when answering multiplication
problems and build memorization.

Standards

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5
7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects
each. For example, describe a context in which a total
number of objects can be expressed as 5 7.
Essential Skills:
Mental math- multiply numbers by memory or through
other efficient methods
Problem solving-math multiplication expressions with
the correct product
Common Core Connections for 3rd grade
Determine the unknown whole number in a
multiplication equation (4 x 6=?)
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiple.
Know from memory all products of two-digit numbers.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and
quantitatively.
NCTM content standard-Algebra
NCTM process standard- This game addresses Problem
Solving because students must apply and adapt a
variety of appropriate strategies to solve the problem.
This game reinforces mathematical knowledge through
mental math problem solving. The student must be
able to solve the problem that flashes before them

electronically.
Overview

This is a computer game found on Math

Playground.com that can be used as review in
multiplication. This technology resource helps students
gain speed and confidence with one digit multiplication
facts. The motivation to beat the other cars works on
students mental algebraic skills. Some big
ideas/vocabulary is solving equations mentally. The
student will need to have knowledge of multiplying
number 0-20.

Accommodations

This game can be played on varies technologies

resources such as a desk top, iPad, smart board, laptop.
If students cannot handle the game independently this
game can also be played as a class.
The level can be adjusted for a challenge or for
struggling learners. The game also adjusts to speed so
the student can take it at their own pace.

Equipment/Materials

Access to the internet

Pre-assessment

Have students demonstrated mental math skills in

other assignments?

Activity

Instructional strategies- Independent inquiry and problem solving,

review.
Mathematical content background- Students must engage in this
activity once having previous knowledge of multiplication strategies.
Students are successful in the construction of useful methods for
solving multiplication and division problems. For multiplication, the
ability to break numbers apart in flexible ways is even more important
than in addition or subtractionStudents require ample opportunities
to develop these concepts by making sense of their own ideas and
those of their classmates. (Page 237 of Mathmatics:Teaching
Developmentally) This activity provides students with this ample
opportunities to develop these vital methods and increase their
mental math skills.
Procedures

Have students independently review using Grand Prix

Multiplication
1. Pick car
2. Select correct answers to make your car move
3. Keep playing for more practice

Formative Assessment

Walk around the room as observe how the students are

doing. What place are they in? Do they seem engaged?

Summative Assessment

Written test assessing the same problems found in this

game. Check for speed but also accuracy. Do not let
students use calculators as this is an assessment for
mental math.

Extensions

Mathplayground is full of math technology games that

align with CCSS. If racing does not meet students
interest, there is a wide selection of games to meet
students interest as well as their algebraic
achievement.
