Essay question: (2 pages)

Seeing people with disabilities as people first has been an ongoing theme in this course.
Realizing that all people have the same basic psychological and social needs helps to
accomplish this goal. With this in mind, consider both the theories and the special
populations we have studied. Apply what you learned during the first half of the semester
regarding stigma theory, personal meaning theory, economy of exchange, learned
helplessness and Maslows hierarchy of needs to some of the special populations we have
studied the second half of the semester. This includes people with learning disabilities,
seizure disorders, premature infants, people with autism spectrum disorder and the aging
population. For this essay, match each of the above named five populations with one of
these theories and describe points of connection between the theory and that particular
population. For example, you might decide to match personal meaning theory with aging
or autism spectrum disorder. Because there are five theories, dividing your essay into five
sections would be a good organizational strategy. Describe both the theory and how you
see points of connection with the particular disability you choose.
