BUILD A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PARE ‘One thing that all teenagers have in common is parents who have responsibility for making sure you grow up and become independent and responsible. | am sure many of you can relate to this comic exchange: Amy: Can people prediet the future with cards? Joan: My mother can. Amy: Really? Joan: Yes, she takes one look at my report card and tells me what will happen when my father comes home! Most of you want to please your parents and make them proud of who you are and what you are achieving, but sometimes it seems a bit unfair when they use your report card to decide whether you can go out on a Saturday night or not. Obeying your parents can sometimes seem like the most impossible task in the universe. Asa teenager, your role is changing in the family. You are no longer a child ~ you no longer need your parents to do everything for you, take you everywhere, or manage your life. You may understand all of this, but your parents may still be working it out. It’s not easy for a parent to see their children grow up and become independent. Imagine you have just been given a puppy. The puppy loves you and follows you around all. the time. He waits for you to take him outside and runs up to you when he wants his dinner. A few years later, your puppy has turned into a small dog. He still loves you, but he knows where to sit and wait for his dinner. Most of the time he wants to be alone A few more years pass and your small dog is now a big dog. He still loves you, but doesn’t show any affection and rarely looks at you when he walks out the door. You wonder why he doesn’t listen to you any more or come when you call his name. You start to think that you must be a bad master. This is what your parents may feel like when you become a teenager. You have been their little baby and then suddenly you no longer want to be seen with them or talk to them. This can be frightening and upsetting to your parents. They wonder what they have done wrong and how they can fix it, So what can you do as a teenager to help build a great relationship with your parents? The first step is to be aware that your parents are working out how best to relate to you. Give them time. You can help them by telling them what you need from them — not gifts, but how they can relate to you. (by Jaime Simpson SYP 1/5/2005) A) Answer the questions in complete sentences. 1.
