Comprehension (10%) Read this report and then answer questions 1- 10. (1) At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, researchers are testing six herbs that might help to cure heart disease. If successful, the research may find a new way to treat hardening of the blood vessels. This would gain international recognition, said Dr H. M. Chang, head of the research team. (2) ‘The research on traditional Chinese herbal cures was being done in a Westem scientific way, said Dr Chang. There is no doubt that the results will be accepted internationally.” (3) There are three major causes of death -- heart disease, stroke and cancer. The first two are related to the hardening or narrowing of the blood vessels. This leads to high blood pressure, heart failure, and clotting of the blood vessels. If the clotting happens in the blood vessels of the brain, the result is a stroke, If it happens in the blood vessels of the heart, the result is a heart attack. (4) The university is using mice for the test. They are divided into two groups. After the mice are being fed with fatty foods for a month, one group is fed Chinese herbs for about one week. The second group is not given the herbs. Then the livers of the animals from each group will be compared and tested for cholesterol levels. (5) Dr Chang explained that cholesterol is necessary for the body to function. But if we have too much, it can lead to heart problems. In the human body, there is a ‘bad! type of cholesterol -- low density lipoproteins (LDL) — and 'good’ — high density lipoproteins (HDL). Too much LDL is bad while HDL is safe and harmless. However, some people have a better ability to absorb LDL and convert it into useful cholesterol than others. (6) Scientists have also found that some babies are born with low or no LDL, receptor cells. Their chances of developing heart problems are six times greater than those of normal babies. These babies usually die young, mostly around the age of two, said Dr Chang. ) ‘The six Chinese herbs being tested have been used as traditional medicine for heart problems in China, ‘In the research centres of moder hospitals in China,’ explains Dr Chang, ‘we have collected statistics showing that the six herbs are very efficient in preventing and treating heart problems.” (8) However it is not clear how the herbs work. If they discover something new, Dr Chang said, they will publish the results in medical and scientific journals for other scientists to read , before announcing their findings to the public. oooa gog According to paragraph 1, resear- chers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong are ......
