With my production I have based it on the topic of the water sports
surfing, I decided that I wanted to do it in the format of a
documentary this means that I am able to cover a lot of different
elements of the surfing sport like the history, competitions,
interviews, pro surfers etc. When I am filming this documentary I
will be using a few different location due to the way I am travelling
round Devon collecting footage of the surfers and what I can gain
from interviews at the surf schools and from the locals. The locations
will be the beach around the north of Devon like Westward Ho! ,
Croyde, Woolacombe and then the most popular destination going
towards the south of Devon, Newquay. The documentary will include
existing footage from years ago showing how the sport has adapted
over the years, the live footage of surfing from my Go Pro and then
actual footage from the interview which will show various short clips
of each interview to relate to the varied topics that will be spoken
about.
I believe that Viibe productions should publish my product because
of how I am portraying such a topic. From the amount that I am
going to cover from the topic you can tell how much passion I have
towards the sport and how it inspires me with a lot of creative ideas.
When you have a passion for something it relieves your best abilities
to make it amazing. I want to be able to share my passion on the
topic with other people and show just what an amazing sport it is
and what you can achieve out of the sport.

Target Audience

With my documentary it has a certain type of target audience, which

are the ones that are most likely to watch this documentary. From
the primary and secondary research I have collected I have come to
a conclusion of what my target audience would be. Between the
ages of 18-25/30and this is due to the age range in which people are
more normally very fit and into the hobbies of sports and exercise.
With a topic like surfing you have to be very healthy and fit and
have very good
balance/coordinate skills to be
able to progress in the water
sport. With a sport like surfing
its a form of extreme sports in
which it can become very
dangerous extremely quickly
meaning that its a sport that
has to be mastered within the
dangerous weather and water
conditions.
My target audience will also be someone within the social group of
C1 and below this is due to them having to have a fair bit of spare
time to be able to continuously practice the sport and gain all of the
important skills needed for the sport.
To gain further research of who my target audience would be I
created a focus group to help me figure out just the type of people
that will be watching my production. They said that the sport is
connects with a very broad age
range being from teenagers to
around early 30s. Also indicating
that this age range of people will
have to be very fit and focused
on keeping the talent for the
water sport. This then backs up
SURFmagazine as they have
quoted 16 to 22 age rangeand
is 80 percent male. But you can
also find older surfers, who
favour the longboard over the shortboard because it floats better
and is easier to paddle. Surfers are also health-oriented. The use of
this secondary information has shown evidence to back up my focus
showing exactly who I am aiming my documentary at.

Market Competitors
Riding Giants
2004 documentary that was filmed and directed by
Stacy Peralta, a famous skater/surfer. (7.9/10 on IMDb.
The filmed documentary traces the origins of surfing
and focuses on the art of big wave riding. Some
featured surfers within the documentary are Greg Noll,
Laird Hamilton, Jeff Clark, and Mickey Munoz.
It was the first documentary to open the Sundance film
festival. It won 2004 A.C.E Eddie award for best edited
Documentary by Editor Paul Crowder.
Rotten Tomatoes: the film has a 92% fresh rating,
having earned mostly positive reviews from critics.
[2]
Roger Ebert said in his review, "Before seeing Riding
Giants, my ideas about surfing were formed by the Gidget movies, Endless
Summer, The Beach Boys, Elvis and lots of TV commercials. Riding Giants is
about altogether another reality."
Billabong Odyssey
2003 Surfing documentary directed by Philip Boston
Action sports documentary that follows the industrys
best big wave surfers as they travel the world
searching for the largest waves that nature has to
offer. 18th months, 6 continents and produced up to 70
foot waves.
Some of the biggest names in surfing, including Shawn
Barron, Ken Bradshaw and Mike Parsons, are on the
hunt for the biggest waves in the world. In their quest,
they leave the coastline behind and travel to the heart
of the ocean, where waves up to 100 feet in height
have been recorded. Riding these gigantic waves can
be fatal, but for these surfers the risk is worth it.
These two are my market competitors due to the way
that the two documentaries have such high ratings in
the topic of surfing

Resources
My resources that will be needed for my surfing documentary will be
from home and then I will be borrowing hired surfing equipment
from the North Devon surfing school.

Cast and Crew

Tracey Hancock Camera
operator/Camera assistant: The dates
they will be needed is Monday 16th 17th
then the 19th-20th operating the camera through certain scenes like
7

the interviews with the locals and then the interviews with the
instructions and mangers of the surf around North and South Devon.
The amount they will be paid around 410 pounds for 10 hours shifts
so for the 4 days I am down in Devon filming about 2/3 hours will be
done a day , but not all will be needing a camera crew so in total
they would roughly do about 12 hours worth of filming and
preparation for the documentary. They will be paid 451 pound in
total for the double job and it will be a lot of re takes trying to
capture the best waves, interviewing people etc.
Joy Johnson Assistant
crew: the dates she will be
work are only Tuesday 17th
and Thursday 18th this is
due to just been an extra if
needed, so different shots
from the interview, the
views and surroundings or
any extra preparation.
Overall working around 4/5
giving her the paid rate of 120.

Idea 2

When it came to the two ideas I had for my final major project I
needed to narrow it down to one, so I decide to do a survey monkey
to get peoples opinion of what they thought. Some of the responses
11

that came back a lot of people agreed that Music festivals have
been overdone, you see them a lot. The surfing is more niche,
original idea and Due to the detailed mind maps you have covered
a lot make the documentary itself more interesting and this is
defiantly the way I wanted it to go because I felt as if out of the two
ideas that the surfing documentary was the better of the two.
With my second idea I wanted to dismiss this idea because I felt as if
it was a more common based topic that everyone would do. With
music festivals they are very popular to do and the same stuff it
repeated on the topic of it. Plus a lot of the planning footage would
be existing footage as around this time of filming there isnt any
festivals going on that are big and popular that could been
mentioned in a music festival documentary
