World War II Begins

Causes of the War

Germany was found guilty of starting the WWI


and had to pay off the rest of the worlds debts.
This bankrupted the country causing many
Germans to hate England, France, and the US
1938 German Expansion: Germany took over
Austria and the Sudentenland. England and
France appeased Germany and said Germany
could have it but no more
Appeasement- giving in to unjust demands in
order to avoid all-out conflict.

Fascism

Fascism: An aggressive nationalistic movement that


considered the nation more important than the individual.
Fascists believed that order in society and national
greatness came through a dictator who led a strong
government and built an empire.
Fascism is anti-communist and anti-religion

Nazi Germany: Adolf Hitler rose to power by blaming


Germanys problems on the Jews and other lesser
humans he told the German people that they were
superior to everybody and deserved to be the most
powerful country in the world.
Imperial Japan took over China, torturing their people
and destroying their culture

Italy in 1919- Benito Mussolini founded the


fascist movement and, along with his secret
police, the Blackshirts, he became Italys
dictator by 1922.

World War II Begins in Europe

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded


Poland.
September 3, 1939, England and France
declared war on Germany (WWII BEGAN)
The German Blitzkrieg (lightning war) used
tanks, aircrafts and paratroopers to break
the Polish army, defeating them by October
5, 1939.

Isolationism: The US
only cared about our
country and our needs
and didnt worry about
or try to help other
countries.

sneak attack at Pearl Harbor
June 6th 1944: D-Day US invasion off of
the French coast. The beginning of the end
for Germany
May 8th 1945: VE day, Victory in Europe

August 6th 1945: US


drops first atomic
bomb on Hiroshima
killing 140,000
August 9th 1945: US
drops an atomic bomb
on Nagasaki killing
80,000
August 15th 1945: VJ

Consequences

1. Start of the cold war


between the US and the
USSR:
Cold War: A time of
heightened tensions
between the US and
USSR. There was no
actual fighting but each
side was ready to fight at
a moments notice

2. The US became a
World Power
The US and our Allies
created the UN as a way
to talk out our differences
before war
The US and European
Allies created NATO. An
alliance of countries to
stop the spread of the
USSR
