SOCIAL JUSTICE PORTFOLIO PROJECT


Overview: For this project, you will pick a social justice/humans rights issue and
present your topic in different forms- visual representation, blog or article, social
media portrayal, and an essay. All of these forms will ultimately be combined into
one larger portfolio.
Process: Throughout the semester, you will work on one piece of this portfolio at
a time. We will spend significant time in class discussing, brainstorming,
researching, writing, and working in groups on each piece of the portfolio.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to help you discover your passion within
social justice. Throughout the semester, you will become more educated about
your social justice/human rights issue and learn how to communicate about the
same issue in a variety of forms. By working in different forms, you will learn
about their purposes and how they create different impacts.
Audience: Your audience will vary for each piece of the project.
Points: Each piece of the portfolio will be worth 25 points, combining to make the
whole portfolio will be worth 100 points.

Assignment Handout (Individual Piece I am focusing on):


SOCIAL MEDIA PORTRAYAL
Overview: You will portray your social justice/human rights issue through a social
media platform (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat).
Process: In class, we will explore different social media platforms and their
benefits and drawbacks when present social justice issues. You will then choose
a platform for your Social Media Portrayal. We will spend class time
brainstorming and developing your ideas, but you will work outside of class on
the piece itself. You will look at different ways your issue has been represented
on social media and examine the effectiveness of these ways. After you have
completed your piece, you will give a brief informal presentation of your portrayal
to the class.
Purpose: Your purpose is to portray your social justice/human rights issue in the
most effective way possible through social media, with regards to audience, form,
and knowledge of your topic.
Audience: Your general audience will be social media users. Additionally, you
should choose a social media platform based on the specific audience reached
by that platform.
Points: This piece will be worth 25 points of your final portfolio.

10 Points: Evidence of Process Work and Substantial Revision Effort
- 3 points: Explanation of thought process throughout the creation of
piece included in Statement of Goals and Choices [a version of a
reflection letter]
- 3 points: Brainstorming and Rough Drafts included with
submission; Initial Concept/Plan and Rough Drafts submitted on time
- 4 points: Noticeable growth from brainstorming and rough drafts to
final submission
8 Points: Purpose/Awareness of Audience
- 3 points: Explanation of reasoning behind choosing specific
platform included in Statement of Goals and Choices [a version of a
reflection letter]

Grade 11 Standards in this unit:


[Not all of these standards are addressed in every single lesson,
but the unit as a whole addresses them. For example, students
will conduct research throughout the whole unit on their
specific social justice/human rights issues (standards W.7. and
W.8.). Also, students will write routinely (standard W.10.) in
Writing Into the Day as well as over time throughout the unit to
include a variety of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Discussions will take place in almost every lesson (standards
SL.1. - SL.1.c.). The particular focus on social media within the
unit will fulfill standard RI.7.
