Proposal, Position Argument, or Evaluation: Revision

Everybody knows that Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health concern, since it is an air
borne illness that can be transferred from an infected yet undiagnosed person to a person who is
not sick. Especially in South Africa where they have a poor health care system.
Evaluation of tuberculosis infection control measures implemented at primary
health care facilities in Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa.
There was a study done in South Africa that describes and compare the tuberculosis
infection control measures implemented by facilities. This survey is based on a self-administered
inquiry and site observations. Data was collected from healthcare workers at 52 different health
facilities. The findings of this study may be used by health planners and institutional managers.
Data Collection: The data collected from them were their socio-demographic details
such as their age, sex and professional category; as well as their responses on questions about the
tuberculosis infection control measures implemented at their facilities and on the number of
healthcare workers at their facilities they knew had been diagnosed with TB during the last three
years through occupational screening. The onsite observations were unannounced by the health
facilities that completed the survey. Observations were made about building designs and air
conditioning systems, availability of personal protective equipment, documents such as
tuberculosis infection control plans, TB registers, specimens tracing log books and several other
documents.
Results: Reponses were received from 52 out of 95 health care facilities which averages
out to be about 54%. The age of participants ranges from 22 to 66 years old. 41 on the
participants were females and all 43 healthcare workers were nurses. All facilities compiled with
requirements to inform patients of the symptoms of tuberculosis and coughing etiquette.
This article is going over the measurements that the hospitals in South Africa have in
place when a patient is diagnosed with tuberculosis, and if the health care workers are informing
the patients with the symptoms of it and coughing etiquette. Overall I think the hospitals are
doing the best they can with what limited resources they have to use.
