WEVE GOT
THE LOOK!

continued from page 1

THE COLOURFUL SHOW WINDOW

India is diverse with myriad cultures and
backgrounds; hence, colours/shape and
sizes are some of the foremost areas that
impact the overall look of a modular
kitchen. The colour trends differ across
the nation. While the western India
prefers the metallic look, the south
prefers vibrant colours, and north and
east go for subtle and pastel shades,
explains Anuj Jain, CEO, JSL Lifestyle
Ltd. People are also increasingly opting
for aesthetic kitchens, which they are
proud to show off.
Although there are many colour
options, the most popular combination is
white with stainless steel finish. And then
there are textures, colours and decals on
shutters, making kitchens not only highly
usable, but also the show window of the
house. Bold colours set the tone for this
years kitchens with contrasting shades on
secondary cabinets. Choosing one or two
valiant colours look classy; avoid multicoloured kitchens. Creating a look of a
warehouse with rustic finishes and

GOING GREEN

ARTISTIC ABODE

richness of the past. Many
pieces displayed draw

period. Located in Khar West,

light equipments is trending. Pastoral

shades also look rich. For an unfinished
look, oil-rubbed bronze for fixtures and
brassware in utensils can be replaced with
stainless steel, suggests Merchant.
THE 'GREEN' KITCHEN
Stainless steel is one of the most green
and recyclable materials. Tested for Zero
radioactive radiation, it is the most safe
and user-friendly green kitchen. There is
no usage of wood in such kitchens;
hence, there is no cutting of trees. All the
ingredients used here are safe and emit
no harmful fumes or smell. Safety
measures, suitable placement of electric
appliances, sharp or heavy metals,
chemical or cleaning supplies, lighters
and match boxes are top priority. Also,
proper flooring, open ventilation,
heighted light plugs and fixtures are
equally important. With the carbon
footprint [increasing], it is important to
act responsibly by using energy
efficiently. Heavy appliances like electric
stoves and refrigerators consume loads of
energy every day. You can save energy by
correctly setting the thermostat in the
fridge and the freezer. Vacuuming the

the fridge every six months also helps,
advises Merchant.
Lighting is another important aspect.
Such kitchens should have lights that
make use of motion sensors that only
activate when the units are opened.
Energy efficiency can also be taken care
of with built-in refrigerator and wall
chimney, adds Rohin Ramchandani,
managing director, Grandeur.
THE CLASSIC KITCHEN
The classic kitchen is efficiently blended
with technology and new age materials.
This concept paves the way for bringing

modern convenience to any traditionallystyled kitchen, providing flexibility in the

layout along with an open feel. A mix of
traditional and industrial materials
coupled with sleek and clean lines make
this kitchen modern, but with an ethnic
touch. Customers have now become
more discerning, and are always looking
for better designs, finish and aesthetics in
terms of interiors of any space. The
kitchen industry is changing; bigger
spaces are being allocated to kitchens.
This kitchen theme lays great stress on
design and functionality that fits the
preferences of almost all customers,
concludes Jain.

Kitchen up-keep
While it is important to have a smart
kitchen, it is equally essential to keep it
healthy and hygienic
Mithila Mehta
theaddress@timesgroup.in

Cleaning the kitchen is an

important and continuous
process. A hygienic
kitchen is single-handedly
responsible for your familys
well-being, stresses Sanvari
Alagh Nair, director,
Houseproud.in. Heres how you
can keep your kitchen clean.
COOK TOPS
This is where your meals are

cooked; hence regular

maintenance of the kitchen top
is a must. Dimple Nahar, owner,
2Divine, The Lifestyle Temple,
suggests, Wipe the stove after
each use. For coated cook tops,
use a soft sponge with a mild
washing liquid. Remove control
knobs and wash with dishwashing liquid; dry them well
before attaching them back.
COUNTERTOPS
Keeping your countertops
always sparkling clean is crucial.

Every night, ensure the

countertops are cleaned with a
micro-fibre cloth, water and a
cleaning liquid. Suggests Nair,
Disinfect the countertops at
the earliest, especially if there
has been a spill or leakage.
Apply a protective grout sealer
twice a year to keep the ants at
bay.

TILES/FLOORING
Sweep the kitchen floor everyday
to prevent build-up of dust,
grime and grit, and then mop it
with a disinfectant. Keep the tiles
clean with any tile cleaning
detergent.
CABINETS
Unfortunately, we forget to clean

the kitchen cabinets regularly.

Prevent grease and grime from
setting in the cabinets by
thoroughly cleaning them with
mild cleansers and a damp
sponge; dry with absorbent cloth
to prevent streaks from
occurring, says Nahar.
SINKS AND BASINS
The sink and its surrounding
areas need to be particularly and
carefully maintained. Step one is
to never let the dishes pile up.
Clean your kitchen sink with a
disinfectant every night. Spray a
disinfecting cleaning liquid on
the sides and bottom of the sink,
the drain and the faucets too and
leave it on for a while before
washing it off. Suggests Nair,
Pour boiling water down the
sink drain along with baking
soda and vinegar. This helps in
unclogging the drain and clears
the passage.

A STORE WITH A
DIFFERENCE
We have a unique
concept of housing
fantastic Indian art
collaborating jewellery
with interiors, fashion
and lifestyle. The Big
Door is a gallery more than a retail store, showcasing products
with concepts. We also customise doors and ceilings. While the
doors are inspired from traditional haveli doors; the ceilings
display antique mirror and hand-painted wooden work that used
to be seen in the darbars in the Mughal era.
TRENDY TIPS
For the kitchen: Make it interesting
with standalone pieces like an old
traditional pram that can be
converted into a mini bar; an old
boat-shelf from Kerala to showcase
fine crockery.
For the drawing room: Use a
conversation piece as the highlight of
this space. Use heritage collectibles
like silver mirrors, marble artefacts or
brass sculptures to accessorise.
QUIRKY COLLECTION
A vintage looking distressed
console with 50 numbered
drawers; glass paintings of
viceroys painted in the
reverse technique; patina
finish cast iron old bench
with velvet cushions meant
for the living room; mirror
with antique wooden frame
placed on an easel.
LIFE KING-SIZE
Your place is a definition of what
you are. You can add personality to a
space with conversation pieces. If
you have an eye for Indian art or
appreciate the craftsmanship of
Indian artefacts, then you can
certainly see these elements in your
living area. Make your space look dressy by adding smaller
accents like traditional velvet cushion covers embellished with
beautiful Indian motifs, or marble artefacts like lotus-shaped
tea light holders.

Planning for progress

Sourabh Gupta, founder and managing director, Archohm Consults
Private Limited, gives us an insight into the world of architecture,
and his passion for development

EXCERPTS:
Tell us about your professional
and personal background.
Life for me has been a process
of continuous evolution and
learning. CEPT University in
Ahmedabad gave me the
necessary skillset to pursue a
career in architecture and
design. My passion towards this
field and my understanding of
design matured from my
exposure at Bouwkundethe
highly acclaimed design school
at the Delft University of
Technology in the Netherlands.
This is where I got addicted to
architecture and architectural
explorations. After winning
many competitions, I eventually
established Archohm. I work
across a cross-section of project
types and scalesfrom product
and furniture development,
infrastructure to urban
solutions. The focus, as always,
is purely on design.

What fascinates you about

architecture?
Architecture is a strong measure
for the development of any
nation. The ability to make a
permanent contribution to
society and a tool to impact a
large number of people is what
makes it fascinating.
According to you, what should
a structure achieve?
Timelessness, joy and
permanence.
How has the architecture
market evolved in Mumbai?
Development here has been
haphazard, but one sees
constant development
happening all across.
Considering the surroundings,
the context is a must and I hope
future planning can be
addressed more sensitively by
the public bodies.
How do you approach projects?
We offer consultancy for
architecture, urban design,
interiors, landscape and product

design, working across diverse

scalesfrom products and
furniture to residential,
institutional and urban projects.
We have a fairly 2D
organisational structure. I
personally lead all design
discussions. Thereafter, team
leaders handle projectsa mix
of architects and interior

designers to facilitate an
interesting interdisciplinary
flavour. Our company stands for
a young and fun approach to
spatiality, which enables a play
of light, volumes and materials.

Globalised in the sense of

being generic; being adoptive
and adaptive and not
restricted by any particular
isms. The new order is the
disorder.

Do you think there is an

increasingly globalised
approach to architecture?

An iconic architect who inspires

you?
Le Corbusier.

Having surpassed our expectations, I have
no hesitation in complimenting the Epistle

have only good things to say about your
social media and other platforms used in
showcasing our work with dilligence.

Working with Epistle has been one
