Prep: Create a scientific method puzzle which includes all important steps and a brief
description of what happens in each step.
-Pass out one piece to each student. Have students come stick their piece to the board in
order of the steps and descriptions.
-Students will write each step and description as they are added to the board
-Once the puzzle is complete, introduce students to the experiment for the day.
-Introduce static electricity. Ask students where theyve seen electricity. Ask students to
share moments when they may have shocked, or been shocked by someone else.
Teaching-Input:
Using effective and varied
strategies, the teacher
provides information for
students to gain the concept,
strategy, or skill.

Teaching-Modeling:

-Introduce brief lesson on electricity and how matter interacts
-Students will fill in a notes page about electrons and protons, and their interaction

Closure:
Actions or statements
made by teachers AND
students that summarize
lesson objectives.
Essential for helping
students integrate ideas,
make sense out of what
has just been taught,
and to improve their
chances of retention and
transfer.
Must be done BEFORE
Independent Practice
Independent Practice:
-Remind students that steps must be in order, descriptive, and in complete sentences.
Science experiment: Set up a four-lane raceway in the classroom. Choose 4 students with different lengths
of hair. Give each of those students a balloon. Choose 4 helper students and 4 racing students. The helper
students will rub the balloons on the their heads for 1 minute. The racing students will then grab the balloon
and begin to pull the can. Other students on the sidelines will be recording helpers. They are in charge of
taking note of any possible errors, and reporting the results.
-Students will discuss the effects of adding more electrons to the balloon to attract the protons in the can
-Discuss how students with longer hair are capable of adding more electrons to the balloon
-Students will be able to record data from their experiment, and begin to draw conclusions
-Students will complete a conclusion based on what they learned in the experiment

Assessment:
The formative and/or
summative assessments that
are aligned with the objective.
-Students will be assessed based on the completion of the their lab report.
-Students must include all steps of the scientific method, and all writing must be in complete sentences.
Differentiation:
-Students will have access to electricity content by both completing a graphic organizer, and conducting a
hands-on experiment to test their knowledge. They will discuss in groups, and as a class about the
knowledge they gain from what they practice.

21st Century Learning:
Includes technology as well
as the 4 Cs: Critical Thinking,
Creativity, Collaboration, and
Communication.
Students must be able to critically think by applying their knowledge of electricity, and
drawing a conclusion based on their date. They must also be able to use the knowledge
they acquire to write an educated guess about what will happen in their experiment. They
must work together to collect data, and carry out their experiment. They will demonstrate
effective communication through completion of a lab report.
