Executive Summary

This summary is for group 2s communication group project. In the group project, we
were supposed to pick a case studies problem or pick a problem that someone is having
personally. As a group we decided to pick case study #2 (The Art Show). We chose this problem
because we felt that we could come up with a few different solutions, and would be able to have
great discussions on why specific solutions would be better than other solutions.
As a group, we started to discuss and reflect on possible solutions to the problem of some
customers wanting to show nude images at the art show, with some customers being opposed to
the showing of nude images. We researched the problem, then checked the pros and cons of each
of the solutions that we came up with, finally we agreed on the solution that we thought would
be the best way to satisfy the customers of the Art Show.
As a group, we decided that having two separate rooms in the art show was the best
option. This solution best fit both the customers who wanted nudes in the art show and those
customers who were opposed to them. This solution also gave us the opportunity to brainstorm
which groups of people would be attending the art show. (Families, Teens, Elderly, Etc.) This
solution gave us the least risk of not having customers show up to the art show.

Project Description

A gallery that features and sales local artwork, is wanting to show some exhibits with
nudity. However, a lot of the members are opposed to the idea. As a group, we had to come up
with the best solution in order to satisfy the customers.

We had make sure we as a group were working together, and encouraging each other to
help solve the problem. Our assignment was to find the best way to display a nude art exhibit
without offending some of the members. We brainstormed possible ideas and came up with the
best solution that kept all members happy.

Methods

Our group began by preparing a Team Contract which listed our group norms and roles
(see Appendix 1). We then applied the reflective thinking sequence to solve our problem dealing
with nude photos in the art show. To solve our problem efficiently, we brainstormed possible
solutions. We took each one and listed the pros and cons of each solution. We will describe
below our methods and findings for each step towards our solution. After we finished our report,
we assigned participation points to each member of our group, based on the quality of their
contributions to the project (see Appendix 2).

Part I: Problem Question

We decided to state our question as an open-ended question, so we could have multiple ideas for
the solution, and then narrow it down after reviewing the pros and cons.
Our group agreed that our key problem was: What is the best way to satisfy every person that
comes to the art show?

Part II: Analyzing the Problem

A Stakeholder (people it will affect)
B Costs to have an extra room
C Policies for the nude photos
Before we started looking for a solution, it was important for all of us to understand the problem
we were facing completely. By studying the problem, we were able to save time, because we
knew certain solutions would work better than others. As we analyzed the problem we
considered the stakeholders in the problem (people who might be affected), the costs of changing
the art show to satisfy everyone, and policies that might affect the problem or our solutions.
A. Stakeholder (people it will affect)

1. Children. First, because this art show was going to have many people attending, we wanted to
satisfy the families that would be viewing the art work. We had to consider the possibilities of
children viewing all the photos in the art show, including the nudes. We knew that parents
wouldnt be extremely happy if their kids were to view nudity. We had to consider this when

looking for our solution. Due to this problem, we agreed the best way to avoid having unhappy
parents was to have a separate room for the nude photos.

2. People who dont feel comfortable viewing the nude photos. There are cons to having the
nude photos in the art show. We had to consider the fact that not everyone would want to view
the nude photos in the gallery. By creating a separate room, this gives everyone the option on
viewing this section of the art show.

3. Those who want the nude photos. We knew that if we didnt put the nude photos in the art
show we would have some members who would be unsatisfied with the art show. We would lose
money from those not attending, so we had to find a solution that would satisfy everyone.
B. Costs to have an extra room
1. Adding an extra room. We had to consider the extra cost it would be to incorporate an extra
room for the art show. We found that it would be more expensive, however with both parties
attending the show (those who would like the nudes and those who would not) we decided
having more people attend would bring in more money and satisfy more people.
2. Having the show in one room. We had to consider the pros and cons to having the art show in
one room. This would make the expenses cheaper; however, we would lose the portion of
members that do not want to view the nudity in the show.
C. Policies for separate room
1. Age Requirement. We had to find a way so the children wouldnt be allowed into the room
with the nude art. By having an age requirement (age 18), this insures that children will not be
able to view it or wander into the room.

Part III: Setting Criteria

In order to come up with the most ideal solution we set criteria before evaluating possible
solutions. Doing so allowed us to evaluate possible solutions before deciding on a final solution
rather than settling on a common idea before really knowing whether or not it is truly the best fit.
We came up with our criteria after stating our overall goal.
A. Overall Goal:
Our overall goal is to create an atmosphere at the art show that allows both those wanting
to see nude exhibits, and those who do not wish to see nude exhibits to have an
enjoyable, and rewarding experience at the show in a safe, and comfortable environment.
We will achieve this goal by educating guests on what exactly to expect at the art show,

and where to see which exhibits. By having a separate room, and using signs, maps, and
art show employees as resources we will be able to provide a positive experience for
guests wanting to see nude exhibits, and those that do not wish to see them.
B. Specific Criteria: The best solution will,
- Apply principles of effective communication that we are learning in the class.
- Be achievable within our four week time frame.
- Cost less than $15.00 per piece of art entered into the show.
- Appropriate amount of research will be done surrounding our issue.
- Abide by local and state regulations.
- Apply strategic problem solving in order to meet the needs of a good solution.
- Consider audience/respect all members.
- Encourage a diverse audience to attend the gallery.
- Consider opposing ideas/arguments.
- Reflect our groups effective communication styles/norms.

IV: Brainstorming possible solutions

For brainstorming, we had to try and come up with possible solutions for solving our Art Show
problem. We were super open, and creative with our ideas which allowed for a better, and more
judgmental free environment. We listed the 6 of the top ideas that we had.

Separate room for the nude art show

Two different art shows
Stay after the regular art show, for the nude art show
Putting an age limit
Hallway designated for nude art pieces
Classic nude sculptures

Part V: Solution Analysis

To get solutions we brainstormed and chose our best 5 solutions. To do this we all came up with
solutions and chose the ones that were the most beneficial for all parties and the most logical for
an owner of an art exhibit. Last we took a vote on the best solutions and went with the most
popular ones which left us with 5 realistic solutions.

A. Narrowed list of solutions

1. Separate room for the nude art show
2. Two different art shows
3. Stay after the regular art show, for the nude art show
4. Putting an age limit
5. Hallway designated for nude art pieces
B. Chart
For the chart you will see in (appendix 2) it will show how we graded the importance of each
solution that could be used towards our cause. We listed each solutions across the top of the
chart and criteria down the side of the chart. For every criteria we used a number scale from 0
(does not fit the criteria) to 5 (meets the criteria the most). After we scored them we added the
final score up to see which solution best meets all criteria needs.
C. Final Solution
Solution 1 scored the highest on the chart we made (shown in appendix 2). In all reality though
we didnt choose that solution because of the score, we chose it because it was the most logical
choice out of all the solutions that would please multiple audiences that enjoy art exhibits. We all
agreed together that this was the best possible solution.
Solution 1 was to put a separate rooms that is dedicated to the nude show pieces. This helped to
eliminate people from seeing it when they didnt want to and it also helped please multiple
audience groups. This solution will allow all groups to come to the art show and enjoy which
ever art they chose to see.
This solution excels over others because:

Its the most cost effective way.

Finding a venue with two separate rooms is easier then throwing a separate art show for
nudes only.
This way will appeal positive to most groups who attend art exhibits.

Possible negative consequences

The Art Show could lose money if they put nude images in the Gallery.
Artists in favor of the nude images might pull their pieces since they will be in a separate
room.
People might miss some of the exhibit if they are in separate rooms.
People could get upset if they accidently see the nude images even if they are separated.

Part VI: Implementation of Solution

When we were done figuring out our solution, we then figured out what we would do to
apply it to The Art Gallery.

A Preparing The Proper Advertising

When discussing our solution, we decided that we need to make sure that everyone
wanting to come to The Art Show knows that there will be nude images present. Having
the proper advertising that states nude images will be present but separated from the other
images. This will allow our audience to know beforehand that they can come and not
have to view images that they dont want to view.
B Gathering Directional Signage
In order to better accommodate our audience, we determined that directional signs would
be a good idea so the people would know what is coming up in the Art Show. These
signs would allow them to go where they want to go and to avoid what they want to
avoid. These signs will be used to inform when the nude image gallery is coming up, and
make sure that we satisfy the people that will be in attendance.
C Getting The Map/Pamphlet
Creating a detailed Map/Pamphlet will be very beneficial to keeping every one of the
guests that attend the Gallery happy. I think in order to make the proper Map/Pamphlet
we need to do a digital layout of the Gallery so that we know that it will be accurate. If
we do not make this properly, we will end up having some unhappy guests.
D Posting Age Limit
Clearly labeling the age limit for the Nude Images will help make sure that we are not
having young kids enter into the area where they are not allowed. If we do not have this
clearly labeled, we will run the risk of offending parents, kids, and even the artists who
created the art pieces.

10
Conclusion

Our team of five classmates in COMM 1010 chose to include a separate room in our art
gallery for the nude art work. We used the reflective thinking sequence to study the problem,
listed criteria to help us judge our potential solutions, and then found the best solution and how
to implement it.
Our final solution is to create a separate room for the nude art work in the art show. This
room will have an age requirement (18) so that parents dont have to worry about their children
going in the room. This is the best solution because it satisfies all attendees. We can still have the
nude art work in the show for those who want it, and we can satisfy those who dont want to
view the nude art work by having a separate room for those pieces.
