1)Each child is interviewed to determine their experience level.
How did they do it?
2)Students worked with the teacher candidates in small groups to
create a digital story.

3)With the devices, students recorded themselves/each other and

practiced uploading/transferring data from an iPod touch to a
Macbook.
4)iMovie was used to create a short film by the kindergarteners.

benefits for acu students

We want our ACU students to see that they can take technology they
are familiar with into the classroom. We want to give them the
opportunity to apply this process in a real classroom setting. We can
give them ideas all semester long in our instruction, but until they have
the moment to watch technology used effectively in a real-life setting, it
is not relevant to them.

benefits for taylor

-This
experience gives young students
the opportunity to apply their
elementary
students
street knowledge towards an educational goal.
-These students quickly learn and become comfortable using the
technology.

Look at that!
Integrating technology has such a great impact on young learners to
explore, create, question, and use other higher-level thinking skills.
Ask yourself: What do my students need from me? Remember that a
classroom is a place where every student is challenged, encouraged,
and inspired to explore.

More than just for Games

- Many children just believe technology is just used for games
- By introducing the students to the educational side of technology
early in their education, you are opening a whole new way to learn
to them.

Mobile Devices for K-5

-Introducing
mobile devices to elementary students takes a lot of
Learners
thought and planning
-6 tier approach is suggested for young learners
-(1)Pre-Device Survey-administer a quick survey to determine prior
student knowledge
-(2)Proper Handling-demonstrate proper use of device. Suggested that
you begin with paper copy and then move to physical device

Mobile Devices for K-5

-(3)Collaboration
of Rule-establish rules as a class
Learners
-(4)Rule for Using Device-suggested to use rhythmic songs
-(5)Establishing Consequences-establish consequences as a class
-(6)Hand out Devices and start activity

Future teaching
-Apply these steps when introducing an activity with technology
-I realize that I need to implement technology within my classroom in
order to allow students to thrive in their educational journey
-IPads are something that I will use within my classroom

Bringing value to all

teachers:
I am so thankful that the education department at ACU continues to be innovative and challenging - not
just to their students but also to teachers like me that have been in the classroom for many years and yet
want to try new things and stay current. - Jody Reese, kindergarten teacher
-

No matter how long you have been teaching it is important to welcome innovation and changes in
your classroom so your teaching stays relevant for your students.

Study Gauges Value of

Teachers are starting to use technology
but not to the full potential
Technology
in schools
Schools frequently acquire digital devices without discrete learning
goals and ultimately use these devices in ways that fail to
adequately serve students and schools (Rich, 2013)
Example- using technology to drill math skills instead of having the students work
with spreadsheets or geometric figures on the computer

In schools now
Arlington, Virginia
-Embraced notebook devices to support writing instruction.
-Students can use their mobile devices during a language arts lesson to read an article
or book of their choosing. Working through the reading assignment, they can discuss the
story with classmates, take notes, or create visual documents for a final presentation shared
with other students
-While

the school originally began by applying mobile technology to a specific subject

area that needed instructional improvement, the program has now grown to encompass
many subject areas.

St. Marys City School District, Ohio

-Teachers use a special tool kit to create lessons designed for an array of mobile
devices.
-One subject area where mobile tools have been actively applied is mathematics.
Students can use their devices to create concept maps, take photographs of math shapes
and create group presentations. Students then share their presentations with classmates
making the work part of their electronic portfolios.
-Enabled the district to increase teacher productivity while enhancing the motivation
and performance of students. Mobile devices are modernizing the way that students
communicate and work with their teachers.
