Stakeholders:
Who are the key stakeholders in the case and what are their primary concerns (HINT:
stakeholders should be labeled, based on their primary roles in the case - e.g., client, audience,
designer, etc.)?
Lindsey Jenkins:
Job Title: Faculty-rank instructional designer at SON.
Role: internal Instructional Designer.
Primary Concern:
She has been handed a project that was already under way with predetermined approaches.
Info:
The main purpose in creating her position was the need for curriculum redesign at the school.
Barbara Miller:
Job Title: Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at SON
Role: Client
Concern:
In the past three years SONs* performance in NCLEX** had dropped.
Looking to improve students performance in the board exam.
Meeting accreditation standards.
Looking for evidence of improvement, good planning evaluation for the pilot courses to show to
accreditation.
Pilot courses evaluation improvement to adapt the case-based learning.
Gina Smith:
Job Title: Professor teaches Acute and Chronic I
Role: Audience first year pilot
Concern:
Writing cases take times so it is hard to redesign the course.
Too many students to read their responses on cases and give feedback.
Students did not use discussion forum or wiki the right way.
David Cunningham:
Job Title: Professor teaches Acute and Chronic II
Role: Audience first year pilot
Concern:
The case-based learning workshop wasnt helpful because the presenter wasnt from the medical
field and examples werent related to nursing.
He believes that case-based learning is not the right method for teaching in the nursing field.
He thinks that he will not cover all information if he uses case-based learning.
Doesnt have enough knowledge about wiki and doesnt think to use wiki for teaching and
learning.
Jason Huang:
Job Title: Instructional Technology Specialist
Role: SME Technology
Concern:
SONs faculty has high volume of technology issues and questions which he has to handle
himself. 70% of the courses are blended or online.
Professors are using different free software so he cant answer all their questions and concerns.
Full-time Faculty:
Job Title: Professors
Role: Audience second year pilot
Concern:
Not stated on the case.
Students:
Job Title: Student
Role: pilot participants.
Concern:
They are not satisfying with the quality of their education.
They have trouble when practicing NCLEX question. This courses dont prepare them for the
board exam (support needed).
They dont know how to apply information to real situations.
No much interactions with professor or peers.

critical thinking skills. Accreditation going on calling for a curriculum to promote students
critical thinking.
Design:
Professors are using different free software for classes. Lindsey needs to provide one software
and help all professors use the same system. Professors are not aware of using collaborating tools
for online classes.
Evaluation:
Lindsey has to create a well-developed evaluation system to provide evidence of improvement.
Accreditation bodies will look at those evaluation. So Lindsey need to have good planning for
evaluation.
(Where in the ID process does the main design challenge fall?
The main challenge felt in the design process.
What has the designer been asked to do?
Lindsey had been asked to:
1. Redesign two courses, Acute and Chronic Nursing I & II, to focus on promote students
critical thinking.
2. Those two courses will be piloting the first year. The pilot will be evaluated.
3. The second year, depend on the outcome, the design will be implement to the rest of the
undergraduate core courses.
The school is looking to redesign two courses with the focus on promoting students critical
thinking. After piloting these courses, we will turn our attention to the ultimate goal is to
redesign the entire undergraduate core curriculum. (p. 138)
Professors training:
Case-based training did not help professors to understand the benefit to use the case study
method. David stated that the speaker was not from the nursing or even medical field.
Professors did not have relevant experiences when they attend the workshop.
Design a well-developed curriculum that promote critical thinking and using case-based
learning method and well-planned evaluation to help in redesign the other courses.
Professors training and eliminate the use of too many free software. Help professors to
create cases that relevant to students real life examples. Also, connect cases and cases
questions to the NCLEX board test.
Class size and incorporate collaboration between students.
I will say that if Lindsey creates and redesign the curriculum to promote students critical
thinking, the professors will have good materials to use for classes. Also, in her design she can
include the software and the LMS that all professors can use. The professors training will comes
after the curriculum design and Lindsey or Jason can provide the training with an expert from the
nursing field.
Experience:
I started my online classes since 2005 for my undergraduate degree. I started taking online
classes as they are convenient for me when I give birth and have new baby. In my middle
journey of education, I started taking two classes on campus and two online. I found that I am
learning more in those courses than on campus courses. We spend less time in discussion and
participation in on-campus courses. I like how students interact and learn from each others.
Purdue Online program is a great example of successful online program. I learned, gained, and
mastered knowledge and performance skills. Discussions forum, wiki, peer evaluations, and peer

reply are all great tools support my learning. So those students at SON* lost the opportunity of
collaborative learning and I feel how they got discourage from learning.

Final Recommendation:
What is your final recommendation? Justify your choice and discuss how you will eliminate or
address the cons listed in the previous point.
Lindsey has enough time to redesign the two courses but her big issues is some professors started
case-based method without developing and mastering their skills to use this method. Also,
professors like David dont believe in using case-based method. Lindsey can develop and
provide a workshop on how case-based method will develop students critical thinking. Having
an Expert in nursing and medical field to create cases will be very expensive but she can conduct
a research and ask students in Master and PhD program to help in creating those cases from their
experience and work. Lindsey can ask for budget to help the pilot success and I dont think that
will be a big deal. Students can work together in groups for two cases and then they will be

different ages and I found all of them were succeed.
