Introduction
Brunswick Elementary is a public pre-K-5 elementary school, part of Frederick
County Public Schools (FCPS), in central Maryland (Staff, 2007). The school is
located in Brunswick, close to the Virginia and West Virginia borders. The school was
built in 1952, with renovations completed in 1979 (Brunswick, 2015.)

The school also has a Principal, an Assistant Principal, two music teachers, a media
specialist, one full time and one part time art teacher, one full time and one part
time P.E. instructor, two math interventionists and three literacy interventionist on
staff.
The student population is 75% White, 9% Hispanic, 9% Black, and 7% reporting as
two or more races (Maryland Demographics, 2016). The remainder belongs to
other races. The students are split evenly between boys and girls, and 44%
participate in the free or reduced lunch program (Maryland Demographics, 2016),
making it eligible for Title 1 funding. However, enrolment projections for next year
indicate that the number of students receiving free or reduced lunches may drop
below the magic 40%, putting the school in danger of losing Title 1 funding.
The city of Brunswick is undergoing a demographic change. In 2014, the US Census
showed the Brunswick city population as 6,102 and the median values of an owneroccupied house as $188, 500 (Brunswick city, 2016.) However, Ryan Homes is
building 1,400 new homes, with base prices ranging from $295,000 to $389,000
(Lerner, 2010.) Due to its proximity to the MARC line, the new housing community
is being marketed to DC commuters. There has been friction between the older
established Brunswick community and the new homeowners.
School Programs
The school has a number of events during the year:
-
The Brunswick Media Center resides in a large open space in the heart of the school.
The space is shared by the media classroom, the library, a computer lab, ELL
intervention area,; through which flow several main arteries of school traffic.
In the media classroom area, there is table seating for approximately 25 students, a
storytime rug, and a Promethean board and overhead projector. The circulation
consists of a hostess stand next to a desk, and buckets to place returned books in.
There is no separate space for leisure reading.
The librarian, Janice Hauver, has been on sick leave since April of 2015. There have
been two long-term library substitutes, and now a third, Susan Gray, began in
March, 2016. Ms. Gray had a MLIS and is obtaining a Masters Certificate in School
Media from the University of Maryland.

are in English. Brunswick supports a small ELL community, although the media
center does not have a specific collection for non-English speakers (other than
Brainpop in Spanish) nor does it have students who need braille materials. The
library does not have specialized collection areas, except for a few specific early
chapter books (Captain Underpants, Frog and Toad, Magic Treehouse series) and
graphic novels.
Technology Resources
The media center has thirteen Chromebooks and a separate computer lab with
twenty desktops.
Students are able to bring in their own electronic devices. The students access the
Internet through FCPSs filtered Intranet (Bring, 2015).
The Media Center subscribes to 25 databases and services:
