LESSON 1 COLOR THEORY, COLOR PSYCHOLOGY, & MARK MAKING

Standards
Missouri Visual Arts Grade Level Expectations
I.1.B.HS.1 - Mix tempera/acrylic paints to create different hues; change in value or intensity; blend one; demonstrate proper use and
cleaning of brushes and palettes; use brushes of various sizes/types.
II.1.E.HS.1 - Identify and use color theory including color value, and color schemes (analogous, monochromatic, and complementary)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to mix the primary colors to create all of the hues in the color wheel.
Students will be able to create tints and shades (values) by adding white or black to each color they create.
Students will know how to properly use and clean a variety of paint brushes.
Students will be able to identify different color values and color schemes within an artwork.

Assessment
Pre-assessment Students will take a pre-test on how much they know about color theory.
Formative Assessment Student will play a Kahoot (online quiz game) that will let me know where everyone is at as a whole class on color
theory information. Students will also complete a journal activity and a class activity relating color to emotion.
Summative Assessment Students will take a quiz over color theory with different question phrasing than the pre-test.

Emotional Color Journal activity
Choose 8 different emotions from the attached list
Find paint chips that you feel best represent those emotions and glue them on the paper
Recreate the paint chip colors by mixing paint on wax paper.
Paint a small area on the paper next to the paint chip
Write what colors were mixed and the emotion it represents.
Glue paper in art journal for later reference
Day 2:
Painting techniques, tools, mark making/meaning, properties of tempera vs. acrylic
2 Video examples of using unique tools and painting techniques

Mark Making Madness Class Activity
Each table is assigned 2 emotions and 2 numbers on butcher paper. Each table will have a container of tools and 2 plates with paint
Students start out with the emotions at their table and then rotate around the table/room to create the next emotion.
They have 3 min. at each emotion word to experiment with the tools to create the given emotion.
When they make a mark they like, they will make it again in their journal and write what emotion is was and what tool they used
They will do this for 13 different emotions
Day 3:
Summative Assessment Quiz over color theory & painting tools
Finish up Emotional Color journal activity if needed

Learning Activities
Kahoot Online quiz/competition to show what students know as a whole class. This program gives graphic feedback for how many
students got correct and wrong answers (students remain anonymous in the feedback)
Note Taking During the presentation and both activities, students will take notes in their journal
Hands on Learning Students will put their knowledge of color and emotion into practice with the 2 activities
Group activity Mark Making Madness Students will interact with each others marks on the paper to create a new composition

Differentiated/Accommodations

Students may use their laptop if they do not have a smartphone. If they have neither, they will buddy up with a partner for the Kahoot game.
Students will be given instructions verbally, visually, and in text form.
Students will be given examples of what is expected
Students will receive bulleted steps for each activity

Classroom Management

Students will have their cell phones away during the lesson presentation so they wont be distracted or distract others.
I will walk around the room while students are working to check on progress and to see if they need help or have questions.
If several students have the same question, I will address the whole class to explain and clarify.
Students, and the class as a whole, will receive verbal feedback on their work

Extensions
All students were given the 100 Color Challenge worksheet in which they had to create 100 different colors just using the primary colors along
with black and white. This helped them to understand that all colors can be made from just those 5 and to reiterate which colors, when mixed,
create which colors. If students finished early on a particular activity, they would be able to work on this challenge.

Follow-up to Todays Lesson


A quick whole class question and answer was given at the end of each day to assess understanding.

Each of the activities in this lesson will help prepare students for the upcoming painting projects.
