Formative Assessment Kahoot and whole class and individual Q/A, Gallery Walk, Music Emotional Activity, Movie Barcode game
Summative Assessment Non-objective Music Painting rubric which includes artist statement, and class presentation

Lesson Structure and Procedures

Day 1:
Pre-assessment - Journal Questions What does abstract mean? What does non-representational mean?
Abstract vs. Non-objective presentation
Disney Movie Barcode Game Group activity non-objective images that tell a story through color only
Watch short clip from Fantasia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Img7Xn57c0
Watch action painting video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoUTUbt_Faw
Introduce Project Non-objective Painting inspired by a non-lyrical song of their choice
Music Emotions Activity Listen to 5 movie soundtracks/non lyrical music selections and list 3 emotions, 6 specific colors (dark forest green) and
3 tools that you could use to represent the song (music chosen by teacher and played for whole class)
Brainstorm songs for project List the same as above for each of the top 3 songs on your list
Day 2:
Have students revisit their Emotional Color page, Mark Making Madness page, Visual Music activity page, and their Brainstorming Songs pages in
their journals.
Kahoot color emotions, objective vs. non-objective paintings, and painting tools/techniques
Demonstration of paint application techniques and what emotion/feeling it could represent
Start project Students will tape down all sides of their paper onto their desk/table. This will help keep the paper from rolling and warping while
students work and also creates a clean white border around their painting when finished.
Day 3:
Action painting video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm3S8G5ULBg
In progress Gallery Walk Students will each have 3 sticky notes to write on. They will rotate to 3 different peer artworks and
1. Write what genre or type of song it portrays (upbeat, calming, scary, etc.)
2. Suggestions on color, techniques, or something they tried/saw and liked
WORKDAY
Day 4:
Write artist statement refer back to journal notes
30 min. to finish painting
Project presentations Students will read their artist statements and play 30 sec. of their song while peers view the painting

Students will receive bulleted steps for each activity

Classroom Management

Students will have their cell phones away during the lesson presentations and student project presentations
I will walk around the room while students are working to check on progress and to see if they need help or have questions.
If several students have the same question, I will address the whole class to explain and clarify.
Individual students, and the class as a whole, will receive verbal feedback on their progress

Extensions
Students may create a QR code to attach to their painting for the song that it represents. They would need to find their song on youtube, then copy
and paste the link into http://goqr.me/ to create their code. They would then print it out and attach it to their painting. People who view the work
will be able to scan the code and listen to the song the painting represents as they view it.
