Suffix ous, ful and y. words that includes this suffix such as,
powerful, dangerous and sunny.

Preparing differentiation activities depending on students


level are the key to support students in learning. Also, it
plays a very important role to improve their levels. I planned
different activities but all of them designed for the same
purpose and it achieved the learning outcomes.

Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)


Speaking , listening and reading:

Task 1:
1. Review the concept of a root(engage)
I will ask them what does root mean?.
I will give examples for them to understand.
2. Introduce the concept of a suffix.(engage, explore, explain).
I will tell them that suffix is a set of letters that comes after the root word and changes
its meaning.
I will give them examples such as, power and it will change to powerful.
Ask them to give more examples.
Whole class activity:
The students will be separated into groups to find words containing the suffixes in the newspaper. The
students will highlight the words they find and record them on the worksheet. The teacher will monitor each
group for accuracy of word choices.
How this activity will help both students and teacher?
Students:
Motivate them to learn because it combines fun and learning.
Capacity to identify the suffix.
Identify the suffix and try to use them in their life while talking with their family and friends.
Teacher:
Assess her students
Notice her students mistakes and improve their learning.
Make sure that her students understand the meaning of the words.

Guided Experience (group working with the teacher)
The teacher will explain the activity and students will get chances to engage and explore.
Match the root with suffix word. (low level)
Materials:

Small
Time: min

Cone and ice cream.

Instructions:
Each student will have a "ful, ous, y" cone, and cream that includes root words such as, power,
danger.
Because these students are low, they will have a picture of the root word to scaffold them.
Students will add the suffix to the root. For example, the word power, they will add the suffix "ful"
and it will change to powerful. Then they will match it with the appropriate cone.
Once students have finishing their cones, they will have another words.
I will model this activity for them by adding the suffix to the root word.
While students doing the activity, I will correct their mistakes if they have and assess their learning.
Reasons for choosing this activity:
Motivate them to learn because it has pictures.
Help them to add suffix to the root words.
Why I choose this for low level?
Low level students faced problem in adding the suffix to the root words . So, this activity will support
them because they will have three words. In addition, this activity has pictures for root word.

Independent Experience (small group activity 1)


Engage, Explore and Explain
Classify and change the words. (medium Level) .This activity will be for two groups.
Materials:
Small boxes that includes "ful,ous and y". Also, root words such as, beauty and danger.
Instructions:
It will be paired activity, one student will choose root word, read it and add the suffix to it.
For example, danger +ous= dangerous.
Then classify it in the appropriate place.
His/her partner will have a turn to choose and add like his/her partner.

They will continue working until finishing all the words.

Why I choose this activity:


Improve students listening because each partner has to concentrate while their partner
reading the words and changing it.
According to Vygotsky, who mentioned that when students work together and have a
chance to discuss and share this will support them to acquire language and learn from each
other. In addition, this is "ZPD", because students can guide their partner while doing the
tasks.
Reinforce students reading, writing ,and speaking.
Why I choose this for medium level?
Medium level students know how to add the suffix to the root. But they need more practice
and support to be able to reach the high level. In addition, by doing as pairs, they will scaffold
and help each other.
Independent Experience(small group activity 2)
Explain, Explore, and Engage.
Worksheet (high level)
Materials:
Worksheet for each student.
Instructions:
Each student will read the sentence, find the word that has the suffix.
After finding the words, they will write the base word without the suffix. For example, the word
dangerous, the base is danger.
Then they will write the meaning of the suffix "ful, ous, and y"
After finishing the sentences, they will create their own sentences.
Reasons for choosing this activity:
Combine fun and learning at the same time.
According to Piaget, who believed that students learn better when they are doing the work
by themselves instead of giving them the explanation from adults.
Develop students reading and writing.
Why I choose this for high level?
High level students have the ability to read sentences without facing any problem. Moreover, they
need more writing activity .

Extension activities:
1. Classify the words.
Instruction:
Each student will have cups "ful, ous, and y". Also, they will have different words.
Students will read the words and change it by adding the appropriate suffix.
Finally they will put them in the suitable cup.
Closing

Make a short review by asking students oral questions and ask them to give examples about words
that has this suffix "ous, ful and y"

Assessment
While students doing the activity I will walk around to observe their working .In addition, I will ask them Oral
question.
Moreover, I will provide appropriate feedbacks for them and improve their learning.
In addition, I will use the checklist.
Reflection:

What went well:


Students were participate, engage and enjoyed during the activities. Moreover, they were busy and quite.
The newspaper activities were great because it has a part to develop students reading, writing, listening and
speaking. Students love it and were cooperate between each other.
Motivate the quite group by giving them stickers. This made all students quite and listen to the teacher.
I integrate different learning styles such as, auditory when they listened to the me and their group while doing
the newspaper activity , visual, when they see the pictures and the words and kinesthetic when they were
doing the activities.
The lesson was flexible, the students understand it which helps me to achieve my learning outcomes.
Even better if:
Give the resources quickly because students were waiting more time to get the resources. This by choosing a
teachers assistant.
Monitor students while doing the activity and assess them because some students were confused to do the
activity.
Next step in teaching and learning:
Use games while teaching.
Monitor students while doing the activities.
Praised students who did excellent behavior and great work.
