An extensive body of research suggests the

importance of close, caring teacher-student
relationships and high quality peer
relationships for students academic selfperceptions, school engagement, motivation,
learning, and performance

So many researchers are doing studies on

relationships in schools, it amazes me that
there are still people that do not see the
importance of this issue.

relationships effortless because they are

intrinsically motivating, enjoyable, and
mutually reinforcing.

Teachers cant force relationships to happen

they must be natural and real. Children can
pick up when someone is being fake.

The basis for student-teacher relationships,

like all close relationships, is interpersonal
liking and trust.

It is not only important for the teacher to trust

the child, but the child must be able to trust
the teacher and know that they care for them
and want only the best for their education.

Students feel they belong in school when

teachers express involvement and warmth by
treating students with care and affection and
showing students they enjoy having them in
class.

Many students in society today do not come

from a loving home, so it is important for the
time that they are school for them to feel
welcome, loved, and cared for.

When teachers are dependable sources of

emotional and instrumental support in
difficult times, students feel connected to
their teachers and safe at school.

Students will want to perform and do well in

school if they know that they have someone at
the school to turn to in times of need. It is
important for them to know that they are not
alone in the world.

Students also need structural interactions,
in which teachers set high standards, clear
expectations, and reasonable limits for
students behaviors and performance and
consistently follow through on their
demands.

Children ultimately need and seek boundaries

in their lives. Boundaries and expectations
give children a feeling of security, because
there is not the feeling of the unknown.

When teachers treat students with respect

and seek out, listen to, and value their
opinions, students are more willing to
commit themselves to the hard work
entailed in learning.

If teachers are not respectful to students it is

going to be hard for the student to show
respect to the teacher. This is a behavior that
must be modeled and taught, as some children
do not have that type of teaching at home.

Taken together, these elements contribute to

a classroom experiences by all its inhabitants
as a caring learning community focused on
authentic academic work.

If teachers and students are working together

in a positive and respectful manner, in which
they have built a trusting relationship, there
will be genuine and authentic learning.
