In This assignment, we have been asked to assess a career, of our choice, in business. I have
always been interested in the Management field, even though making a decision on my major has
always been complicated for me. The assignment specifically asks the following questions: what
is the job description, career path, general education, salary, outlook, pros and cons, as well as
required us to either interview, or research a famous person in this career field. Doing all the
researches helped a lot to know exactly what I'm getting myself into by following this career path
which is Management Analyst. Before, I had only a vague view of this career and I could barely
detail the specifications of the job. However, after this assignment, I know all of the pros and
cons, and I feel more confident with my decision, since my personality is similar to those
personalities that succeed in this career.
From this project I realized that reading about a career cannot give a full perspective about the
career but talking to someone in someone in the field, gives crucial information. In addition.
Im glad to have completed this assignment.

ASSESSING A CAREER IN BUSINESS

I am an international student studying generals at Salt Lake Community College, and I am pretty
interested in doing business. I decided to choose management analyst in a small to mid-size

company as a career. My goals in the future are to develop my familial alimentary business in my
country, and also create my own business later. Actually I am taking Business and
Communication class, and I realize the importance of management. I am able to listen,
communicate, and work with tons of different people. I am also pushing through, even when
faced with though obstacles, but I really to have talk with experimented managers about their
story, their path educational, their experience. My dream is to develop my familys business and
implement others personal business. I will need to work with people and manage them. That is
one more reason why I am learning English as a third language. Manager must be able to
accomplish department objectives by maintaining staff, planning and evaluating department
activities. I would like to learn more about the job by interviewing an experimented, and by
doing some researches.
Management analysis basically consist to:
Plan, organize and coordinate various projects, programs and services involving diverse
administrative operations; may administer or manage specific projects, programs and/or
services; recommends and assists in installing improved administrative methods,
procedures equipment and facilities.
Conduct research and analytical studies on a variety of programs and issues; coordinates
and expedites reports and program information from departmental input; develop
procedures and forms; formulate recommendations and prepares reports and
correspondence.
Assist in determining financial methods, procedures and costs pertaining to a
departmental service or program; conduct cost benefit analyses and reviews and prepares
financial and statistical reports; coordinates contract arrangements with other
organizations and private parties.

 Where required, prepare grant applications and handles the details of grant or proposal
preparation and administration including contracts with federal, state and local agencies.
Confer with other departments, officials, consultants and explains policies and
procedures; may make presentations on assigned projects and programs.
Provide staff support to committees or other departments, as assigned.
May assist in budget preparation and administration.

May administer various staff functions of the department and/or train and evaluate
assigned staff.
From the Occupational Outlook Handbook, I learned that a Manager Analyst starts working at
least with a Bachelor degree. Most managers have at least the Bachelor degree, and the work
experience required is less than five years. However, obtaining a master's degree is usually
needed to move forward in this field. The Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation
may improves job prospects. The median annual wage for management analysts was $80,880 or
38.89 per hour in May 2014.
About the environment of this profession, we should notice that Management analysts held about
758,000 jobs in 2014. The industries that employed the most management analysts were as
follows:

Management analysts usually divide their time between their offices and the clients site.
Because they must spend a significant amount of time with clients, analysts travel frequently.
Analysts may experience stress when trying to meet a clients demands, often on a tight
schedule.

In 2014, about 1 in 5 management analysts were self-employed. Self-employed analysts can

decide how much, when, and where to work. However, self-employed analysts often are under
more pressure than those who are wage and salary employees, because their livelihood depends
on their ability to maintain and expand their client base.
In the optic to get further information, I decided to conduct an interview my teammates dad over
the phone and by email too. As planned, I interviewed Andrew Fuchs. He works at Chartwells
Eat.Learn.Live as a Manager. He has been working for this company since 2005. He has a good
experience. Andrew graduated with a Business Management Bachelor degree from Birmingham
Youth University. Andrew was really busy so he suggested interviewing him over the phone and
by email, but he invited to come to his office next Saturday in the morning. He told me also he
has many interesting things to show me about his experience. It would be a chance for me to see
him at work.
I based my interview on this number of questions:
Topic 1: Profession choice and work environment
First, Id like to know the reasons of your choice, and how is your environment.
1. Why manager analyst?
-Are you satisfied of your job?
-Do you have any regrets about your job? If yes what?
2. How did you get started as a manager?
-It was you first choice?
-If no, what was your first choice?
3. Can you tell me about your education?

-How does Communication class help you in your job?

- How much money did you get when you started your first job after graduation?
Topic 2: Weekly duties &Experience
I can say I know why you chose this profession and how you got started; now Id like to know
what your do exactly at work.
1. What is the first thing you do when you arrive at work?
-What tasks are the four important tasks you are responsible for accomplishing?
2. Can you tell me the most interesting and why is it?
-What do you like most about your job?
-What would you say you like least about your job?
3. How do you motivate your employees
-Do the strategies always work?
-Are you allowed to take vacation time or days off when you choose?

Topic 3: Work and family, the relation?
I saw the nice picture of your family in your office the day randy and I went to your office. You
seem a good father and a good husband. Im curious about the effects of this job on family life.

After interviewing Andrew, the answers collected are essentially:
Topic 1: Professions choice and work environment
Based on his responses in the first six questions, Mr. Andrew Fuchs has chosen manager as a
profession because he always had the love of motivate, train, help, lead people around him.
Thus he found this profession better for his personality. He is satisfied of his job, and he doesnt
have any regrets. I learned about that, the careers choice is primordial to hope having a good
life. The choice must be based on the personality, the weaknesses, the strengths, the goals etc. He
said that he has no regrets today, and he enjoys his job every day.
Andrew said the most important thing at work is communication, so good knowledge in
Communication is really required in that career. He started his college in Texas, and after his
Associate Degree he moved to Birmingham Youth University for his Bachelor Degree. Andrew
said he got his first job in relation with his major almost 7 months after his graduation. He started
at Wells Fargo as an assistant of the Business Executive Manager. Andrew shared that he got
18.5 dollars per hour when he started his first job. His path educational might be a good example
for me.
Weekly duties &Experience

One the biggest challenges that manager face is motivating employees. If employees are pushed
too hard to work, they start to recent managers and consider the workplace as a sweatshop, said
Andrew. He has four major roles in the company, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and
controlling. He likes all of them. I learned that being passionate of our job makes us better. He
collaborates with other managers to make short-term and long-term plans for the company. As
the manager, he uses some theories as theory X, Theory Y, Theory of Maslows hierarchy to
manage workers. He tried to explain me briefly the theories. I understand a little bit what I am
going to study in the future.
I learned the management function, leadership is perhaps the most critical in that job. For
Andrew, leadership means offering strategic leader. I learned also that decisions on hiring and
how to manage employees are largely determined by the companys strategic focus, and a good
manager must adapt his plan and strategies on the companys goals.
Andrew has been in the company for almost seven years, and he had held his current position for
five years. He said that he is allowed to take vacation time or days off, but he must make a
clearly plan in advance.
Work and family, the relation?
Andrew said, the family is the first reason to look for a good job. He said his family contributes a
lot on its performances. Andrew told me he has sometimes business trips, and that takes a lot of
times. He thinks that cannot affect his childrens life, because his wife is really formidable. She
helps him to raise very their children. He spent his weekend at home when he doesnt have to

work, but he constantly checking his emails. He would also recommend this career to his
children, but I believe that it really depends on what they like to do in the life.
Goals and advices
Andrew felt very happy about his future plans. He said he is going to open his second own
business next year. Andrew and his wife own a Decoration Company. He wants to open a
restaurants and a manufacture company back in his origin country, Bolivia. He is also going to
open a business with some partners from France, China and England. He didnt talk a lot about
that. Andrew is taking master classes online, and he is going to graduate next year. He told me
that he is planning to learn French as a third language. In fact, Andrew is from Bolivia and
Spanish is his first language.
About my educational path, Andrew gave some advices as taking accounting as a minor. He said
accounting is one of the most useful classes for business. Understand a balance sheet, income
statement, and statement of cash flows are helpful things in the life when analyzing them such as
investing in stock, said he. Andrew has found electronic resources communications skills most
practical and valuable in his job because they need to communicate easily and anytime. Also, he
was proud of me when I told him that I am learning like him my third language. He told me to
keep learning, and that will help me a lot in the future. Andrew promised me to find me someone
for another interview if I am in the need.
Although, according to Subhadeep Basu, Ex-Cognizant employee, Assistant Manager in Bank,
we list as Pros and Cons :
Pros.

You are more likely to work on a variety or projects which reduces the potential
for boredom and complacency.

You meet new challenges on a regular basis, and network with and learn from, a
range people.

As a result, you develop new skills from new challenges and people you
encounter on the way.

You usually earn more money than working as a permanent or long term
tenured employee.

There is greater flexibility in choosing when you work and on what projects, and
it is easier to plan holidays if you are willing to take time off between contracts.

You usually have the luxury of focusing on specific outcomes and deliverables
for which you are employed.

Cons.

You usually do not receive any kind of entitlements or benefits such as health
care or employee shares.

If your personal circumstances change, i.e., if there is a loss in your family or an

illness, you are not paid for time away from work hence a potential loss in
significant income.

Opportunities to attend formal training, conferences and workshops are usually

limited, unless you pay for it out of your own money.

Finally, this assignment introduced me to some new career ideas and also taught me a lot about
what I have to expect. I can say I got a good reason to keep my choice. In fact, I was not really

sure that management analyst was an exciting job until interviewing Andrew. Although I will
focus on this choice, I need to improve my leadership. I am fascinate to see how interesting this
career. I also learned about some aspect of the work environment, what a manager might do
every day at work. Andrews advices should help me on my educational path. I really needed it.
Personally I am really shy, but when it comes to meet new people, I am excited, and I can try to
do that easily. It was not difficult to find a manager for completing my assignment, I got lucky I
knew someone. I am convinced that its a great career choice.
