My cousin have been working in the manufacturing of toys industry for quite a while.
The industry has several challenges concerning the environment. As it is manufacturing of toys
produces a large amount of solid waste. Additionally, the manufacturing process also poses a
great danger to the environment due to other forms of pollution such as the emission of harmful
gasses. This issue affects the business because there are strict environmental laws that require the
use of different equipment and methods that will help reduce the pollution (Haggar, 2007). The
industry faces difficulties as it tries to reduce the effects of the environment. It undergoes further
cost as it tries to solve these problems. This essay gives an overview of industrial waste as the
primary cause of environmental issues and the steps taken to help the situation.
Working in this industry has helped him gain broad knowledge concerning the
environmental matters that affect it on a daily basis. The company faces difficult from the law
and the municipal government. These are the people who insist on having a clean environment,
but they do not understand what the business has to go through to reduce the amount of waste. In
the recent years, there have been complaining that our company produce a large quantity of
waste. Somehow this is true because the industry has a lot of plastic being disposed as waste
beginning from the manufacturer to the consumers. When the toys are destroyed, the end users
tend to dispose of them anywhere. For this reason, it becomes difficult for the people responsible
for cleaning the environment. The complaint has been raised to the CEO of the company for an

Hamad Alsharani
extended period (Haggar, 2007). However, they have not found a solution of how to help that
situation because consumers are tough to handle.
Therefore, the law has insisted that the industry should have followed up programs. By
this, it means that the company has to hire additional workers who will be going to the
community collecting the carelessly disposed toys. Despite the efforts put into the industry, this
problem has not been completely solved since there is also an issue with the packaging bags. In
my opinion, I would say that industrial waste is a long chain that requires a lot of effort for the
eradication. Research shows that 4% of the generated solid waste is from homes. The industry is
said to be responsible for over 30% of the waste. The country also has to budget annually for the
ways to use so as to reduce the waste (Herman, 2006). Compared to other industries,
manufacturing of toys has been rated the highest in the production of solid waste. Each day, the
industry produces over fifty pounds of garbage and over 1000 pounds in a year. The law insists
that the company should look for ways to reduce this waste.
The second challenge was the industry facing in the waste was that it said to be toxic.
Due to the chemicals used during the manufacturing process, when the waste products are
disposed of away they are dangerous to the human health. A chemical such as Biphenyl-A is
commonly used in toys. However, the company is unable to regulate its toxic level. Therefore, it
poses health implications to the end users due to the poor regulation. The toxicity level with this
garbage is unprecedented. Such a problem has made it difficult for the industry to know the best
solution to deal with the waste. In most cases, the waste is disposed of in the incinerators. The
incineration process produces mercury and lead which are very toxic (Herman, 2006). The
chemicals are produced by the smoke stacks, at high temperatures it produces byproducts such as

Hamad Alsharani
dioxins and furans. Solid waste is a cumbersome issue to the industry and the community as well
since we do not have a remedy of how the problem can be solved entirely.
The incineration process also produces a remnant of ash that is made of toxic chemicals
which are left over. The incineration process does not help in reducing the amount of waste, it
causes other forms of pollution such as the redistribution of toxic chemicals through the smoke
that is released into the air, and it produces another form if solid waste, ash (Hester & Harrison,
2002). This waste has to be disposed of in the landfills. The garbage pits are told that they
eventually leak risking the lives of people living with them. A study shows that there is increased
the number of children born with defects in the neighborhood of this landfills. They are capable
of emitting harmful gasses, they are also a threat to the groundwater, and they also produce
odors. The industry faces restriction from the law since it specifies that the industry should
provide facilities that should be used in the landfills. The company is also responsible for the
problems that are encountered after the landfills are closed. After being closed, they may be used
as playgrounds or parking lots (Hester & Harrison, 2002). Later on, they may sink endangering
the community; the industry is counted responsible for such problems.
The company has implemented several mechanism to help reduce the number of waste
products. One of them is that the company sells some of the waste to other manufacturers who
can use them to produce other product. Although this program helps in reducing the waste
disposed of, the business incurs additional cost since it has to hire more workers to help in the
distribution of the products that the industry does not need. Therefore, the company has tried to
look for ways that will contribute to reducing the cost, for instance, they ask other manufacturers
who need those products as raw materials to offer the labor required. Different equipment and
procedures are employed during the process of moving these waste materials out of the company.

The industry also realized that packaging also contributed to the increase in solid waste.
Therefore, it started using reusable products, and they reduced the use of plastic and waste paper
as packaging. The improvised the use of bags which can be re-used by the end consumers
(Nemerow, 2007). It also ensures that it uses minimal packaging on its products. Another step
that has been taken by the company is follow up and enlightening programs. The consumers are
taught on the risk of inadequate disposal of plastics and things that they can do with the solid
waste. The company conducts home visits to collect the products which are not in use anymore.
The industry gives a reward to the people who have a lot of plastics that is not in use stored
(Rogoff, 2014). This process encourages the consumers to store the waste in safer places they
also take further steps in collecting the waste. Finally, these products for recycling hence they
reduce the amount of solid waste disposed of homes.
The recycling process helps in reducing the monetary and the environment problems
brought by incineration and landfilling. This process allows used materials to be used in place of
virgin materials. Hence, it reduces the demand for natural resources. It further conserves energy
and also creates job opportunities in the community. On the streets and towns, the company has
placed recycling bins whereby all the used plastic is disposed of, and it is collected for recycling.
The industry also initiated another program that was aimed at reducing the amount of waste by
stopping throwing out of goods. This program is supported by the law because it has raised
strategies that minimize the dependency of the landfills (Nemerow, 2007). Therefore, the
industry looked for ways to cut on the amount of waste. The baseline for these processes is
adopting the idea of recycling goods.
In conclusion, the industry for manufacturing of toys brings a significant amount of
revenue to the economy. However, it has its challenges one of them being that of industrial

Hamad Alsharani
waste. I think that this is common for most of the industries in the world since none of them can
control their waste altogether. I think that it is important that such industries become careful with
the disposal of these waste. They should look for ways which will help solve their problems.
They should not count the cost that they undergo in utilizing the environmentally friendly
process (Rogoff, 2014). They should understand that if they become careless with these harmful
waste, they pose a danger to the health of the entire community and that of their workers as well.

The paper is about solid waste management and the problems that has been faced by the
toy industry due to environmental law enforcement companies. The solid waste produced by toys
is greater than most of the industries.

In the paper my cousin told me that he has now the idea of its environmental impact and
they tried to resolve the issue, but couldnt do much since the chemicals used in making toys are
hazardous. The industry has to suffer from financial losses and it gets hard for it to if they start
following all the rules and regulations to save this environment. They have to hire a whole lot of
employees to pick these toys from different places and dispose them off properly or put them to
use as a recycle material.

Many awareness programs has been arranged by different companies and has been
encouraged by environmental protection societies and these programs helps but the feedback
from clients is not very positive once they try to change their packing or the material of the toy.

This is one of the big industries who are generating good revenue but like other industries
have failed to dispose their solid waste properly. It is necessary for them to dispose their solid
waste properly as the health of whole community depends on them.
