Teaching Tips/Information:
1. Peace Officers Memorial Day is held annually on May 15. This day is in honor of
federal, state, and local officers killed or injured in the line of duty. It is observed
during Police Week.
2. It is an observance, not a federal holiday. Many businesses and communities will
lower their flags to half staff.
3. The Fraternal Order of Police and its Auxillary organizes a national memorial
service on this day. The service is followed by the placement of a memorial
wreath at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.
4. Came into effect on October 1, 1961. Congress asked president John F Kennedy
to honor law enforcement on May 15. He signed the bill on October 1, 1961.
